Audiophile Speaker Panel of unknown origin - All Polydax. SOLVED: Fuselier Model 9

Unbelievably this mystery has been solved. These have been positively identified as Fuselier Model 9 speakers, less than 10 made, designed and built by John Fuselier, they retailed for $3k in 1981/82 and could have been purchased with 10" ported subs. They received very positive reviews. Craziness!

Well, I'll be d***ed.

When this thread started, I had this vague feeling that I had SEEN these before- but couldn't put my finger on where or how. I couldn't find any info on them either, so I never bothered to comment to this thread.

Fusilier definitely makes sense, though. Especially the way the crossovers were built- that's his style, for sure.

One note- I'd bet Jerry Runels at Audio Lab of Georgia would know something about them. I'd be willing to be that he sold John Fusilier the drivers that went into the speakers!

Regards,
Gordon.

So you are actually familiar with them? Apparently someone known as 'Fat Julian' from Georgia was a big Fusilier reseller. 'Fat Julian's Audiomart' ring a bell?

I followed this thread from the beginning. What a great find! I may have missed a post or two. Have you been able to give them a real listen with all the corrected electronics? These would probably be my main speakers if I had them.

I have, they are very binary speakers. They either sound absolutely amazing or fall flat on their face depending on the subject matter listened to. When it's something that is their forte it sounds nearly unmatched, airy, dynamic, just stellar. If it's not something they like then it sounds chunky. As a result of their size and my crusade for building LX521's I will likely be passing them on in the near future.

My exact impressions. Thought it may have been the room, positioning, poor pairing with my amp(s) etc. How could something capable of sounding so good also be capable of sounding so poor??? Just doesn't make sense. :dunno:

At any rate, I was glad to have pulled them out of that dank basement and got them back on their feet. They are truly beautiful in their design and a piece of audio history. And now, thanks to mccarty350 we know their story!

hey John, did you move everything to TN, including your IMF's? How's your listening room now? How are you liking the TN area?

I'll be damned. I came EXTREMELY close to snagging those when they were still in ATL. Can you elaborate on what "chunky" means?

No, I have them in a big room and have tried them with several amps, I think it is just one of their attributes. It's difficult to put an audio concept into words i.e. what they are amazing at versus what they are abysmal at. I imagine with subs they would sound a lot better but it wouldn't have changed the nature of what their forte's were.

They are super cool looking and it was a beyond cool restoration on your part. They really are neat looking and stellar sounding for their focus. I have to give credit to another person gstewtoo (I hope that's their AK handle) who bought my Maplenoll and was gracious enough to ID these based on a single photo!

I indeed did, I have been here about a year and a month and the IMF's made the move. They are permanent keepers...I love them.

My listening room now is about the same size as my basement listening room but the acoustics are not quite as good, the ceiling is kind of hexoganol/loft-like. I have added innumerable room treatments and have things CLOSE to the prior level of quality although not quite perfect. I love the TN area, the topography is great and the people are really friendly. The driving and drivers however are both abysmal.

Thank you for all the help with the IMF's when that was my crusade, they would be my #1 speaker (I like them better than my 107's) if they could achieve SPL's loud enough to hang in a large room but unfortunately they can't. For a small to medium sized room however they are just amazing.

Yep, I remember you were on the bubble but were waiting for one more price drop and I ended up pulling the trigger if I recall. Chunky is a subjective term and hard to quantify, no doubt there.

1. Music that is 'pure' as in female voice, jazz, well recorded, etc. etc. perform with complete aplomb.
2. Music that is 'complex' or 'poorly recorded' sound "compressed" "chunky"

Maybe I'm not using or picking the best adjectives but those are my thoughts. Reverb, maybe you can capture it better or with a higher level of description/conciseness than I can?

I can't wait for the "near future" to come! I've been looking for an excuse to make a road trip to KY! Shipping these would be a mistake.

Talk about a thread coming full circle, amazing how one chance meeting solved this riddle.

I know it doesn't seem to make sense, but a really good sub (or subs) does something that I don't really understand to fix a lot of what your describing.

I agree, I would never ship them. If you ever decide to make the trip PM me, I'm not likely to have a 'near future' BT posting, I will just respond and work if someone has interest. I'm in TN but only about an hour and change from Bowling Green. Also any AK'er travelling through my area are welcome to stop over for a beer and a listen to any of my gear, I'm lonely down here I had a great crowd of audio folks up north and now it's just me unfortunately!

That might be worth performing an experiment with. I just haven't done so. I have a sub in that room hooked up to my HT I just didn't want to deal with moving it to my 2 channel setup and use splitters to send the preamp to the sub.

Same here. In NYC it was easy to find fellow audio nerds. Not so here in Miami.. or rather, "Bose Country"

Shipping panel speakers via Uship is pretty cheap (they don't take up much room) and extremely safe. I shipped a pair of Quads last month all the way to Iowa for $250
