Guidance needed on the procedure for adjusting the playback and recording head azimuth on a Pioneer RT-707 reel to reel.

On page 31 and 32 of the downloadable service manual. (it's on the pioneer audio forum)

Use either a professional alignment tape OR if you have a lot of pre-recorded tapes use one of them to set to the prexisting tape's alignment.
 
If there is a track worn into the head, do not change the alignment so that the tape no longer lines up with the track. This is the most common "novice" error.

Look at the locking compound on the alignment screws to see if someone has been diddling.

If you do elect to do the alignment, do not peak for maximum high frequency response. Peak for maximum phase coherence in the upper midrange.
