I've used irfanview for a long time, for quick viewing and very simple photo enhancement. I use Photoshop CS4 otherwise, especially for manipulating raw files.

Camera is Canon 50D. Lenses: 17-85mm, 10-22mm, 75-300mm. I really like the 75-300 tele zoom, which becomes 120-480mm equivalent on the 50D.

.....Zeromancer, considering how well you composed the shot filling-the-frame, and it had crispness to it, I thought it might have been shot off a tripod....good job as maybe the stopped car was vibrating from the engine idleing.....

.....I'm personally looking for crispness in these shots in both the B&W and Post Your Photography threads, and you'll be lucky if you get it without a tripod....if the shot is important to you, and nothing's going to move in the shot, why not eliminate any chance for camera-shake right up front, day or night?....once on a tripod, stop down the lens as far as you can get away with, stopping one stop short of fully-stopped down, and you'll see the potential for image-quality your camera has with that lens....dig them tripods out and blow the dust off 'em, guys.....

.....wanna' carry this crispness-thing further?....try a fill-in flash on some of these long-lens bird shots....using fill-in flash all day long is a good idea to me....a flash brings crispness to any subject.....

Hemlock Lake Spillway

One of the lesser known beauties of NYS's Finger Lakes, about a mile from my home.

Very nice Fran! Love the shoreline in the distance. Would love to see a shot of them in the background and just water in the foreground. Did you take any without the concrete structure in the foreground perchance?

Zeromancer, Very dark but the tones on the rocks are just wonderful. Handheld or tripod?

Yes, but I wasn't very happy with what I got. Most of the Northern shoreline is dike and doesn't have any vantage point with some sort of man-made presence involved. See below.

I plan on capturing the lake from on the water and see what I can manage. I was trying to capture the essence of the untamed lake just on the other side of the spillway and use the concrete as a line of separation between the natural and the man-made worlds. Hemlock Lake is one of only two lakes in NY that are designated "Forever Wild.' The other is our sister lake, Canadice, that feeds into Hemlock from the east. She's another beauty. Both are amazing canoe lakes with Black Bear and Bald Eagles seen frequently in the area.

I really like this shot. Again the backdrop of the trees and shoreline is just wonderful. Thanks for the explanation. We sound like very similar photographers in our way of viewing and choosing what we shoot in comparison to man made vs nature and trying to crop or keep a little of each to divide and balance it. You might like mine.

THAT is an awesome shot! I love the sense of timelessness that was captured. Very serene, and very charming. I'm definitely going to be checking out your gallery...

Thanks! :) It does kind of have a nice timeless, lazy charm to it.

There is a little patch of gray in the lower middle I'm noticing now. I think I might not have Sepia toned it well enough in the bath, or didn't agitate it well enough.
 
Here's a couple I recently converted to B&W. One people, one landscape. We went to the Maple Festival in Highland County, Va back in March. I got three shots of this man weaving baskets outside on an overcast day. This is my favorite one.
The landscape of the Blue Ridge Mnts. was taken at Wintergreen, Va.

Chillwolf, Like the Blue Ridge Mtn one alot. Did you push up the contrast or metered for the sky? Or a bit of both?

MikeyBC that is a great shot. I like dark ominous path of sky and the wispy trees and grass. If you are interested in swapping print I would love to have one of those!

Zeromancer, would also be interested in a print trade too!
