Beatles Gleefully Outdone

Since these are cover songs from a TV show, the record was broken by the combined popularity of the SHOW and the ORIGINAL SONGS. I'm nearly as pessimistic about the popular music of the moment as anyone, but I see this as more of a humorous statistic than as having any meaning regarding Beatles records vs the Glee soundtrack.

I didn't even know they were playing it on the radio..

I may be old enough to just barely remember even the '70s but remember enough to know that the current generation doesn't have the copyright on mindless crap. I don't know how many times I heard that "I love yooooou, I hhhhonestly love you" song on TV when I was a kid. Nasty stuff, that.

It's music for people who aren't into music. That's all. Glee is the same thing as all the mindless variety shows from back then. The only difference is these days they have the cross-platform marketing thing figured out a bit more...they realize it's not just a TV show or musical act, it's all these things and people just want to eat it up. The Beatles figured that out, too, and did it very well. The machine behind them just wasn't was well oiled.

Ha, good point. The comparison actually isn't as meaningless as I just said, in that respect (as a multi-faceted marketing feat).

True.. we had the Bananna Splits and HR Puffin' Stuff back then..

Lay off The Banana Splits...I loved 'em! "makin' up a mess of fun! Lots of fun for everyone! Tra-la-la, tra-lalala...." Ok, I was only 4 and my other favorites were Johnny Cash and Hank Williams (sr), if that gets me some cred.

+1 on that. Great, now I gotta dig out my Banana Splits Membership Card. :sigh:

Ya want mindless drivel? How's "Muskrat Love", enough? OK how about The Bay City Rollers. I could go all night....

Hey.. now don't pick on the Bay City Rollers.. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have been able to show off all my great skating skills and get all the cute girls at the rink...

TMI, Simi. TMI. Can't we get back to beer openers? :)

For my part, I had no idea that Glee had ever charted anything. I thought it was just another TV show I didn't like. From the linked blurb they're throwing 6 songs /week at the chart? That's a serious shotgun approach.

What are the chances that even one of these so called hits from this drivel called Glee will ever be heard 50 weeks from now much less 50 years from now

We already most, if not all, of their "hits" as they're covers of already tested & successful numbers. I think I recall having read somewhere that the Glee cover of "Don't Stop Believin'" is to some extent responsible for reviving the career of Journey. Now I have a valid reason to not like Glee. :smoke:

No kidding. You think the promo budgets behind major label stars are impressive? Imagine having SME, Clear Channel, and Newscorp working on your behalf, all at the same time.

To be totally honest, I had never heard of Glee until now... But I know who Buggs Bunny is.. Sadly I'm starting to understand my father when I was a kid...
