Best Cart for Technics SL-M1 P-Mount

The AT3482P is for real. It really is a carbon-fiber cantilever with a conical diamond at the end. Audio-Technica made several entry-level (pricewise) cartridges with CF cantilevers. The 3482P sounds great and is a lot of fun for very little money.

re: AT3482
I'll also recommend this inexpensive cartridge. It's very forgiving on noisy/dirty vinyl, but don't let that dissuade you from using it for more hi-fidelity pursuits. It sounds terrific, and for the price, you can't go wrong. Even as a fan of the Grado sound, I think the AT3482P sounds better than a Grado Black. It's also half the price.
PRO TIP: Part number: AT3482H/U is the same AT3482P p-mount cart, but it comes packaged with a 1/2" adapter.

Well... This is exactly what I wanted. So many opinions/options. A few definitely out of budget but many quite helpful. I have been looking at the cheapo AT-3482p. It has some good reviews but is this thing for real? "Carbon fiber cantilever"? I currently have the AT92E on a SL-BD20 that I'm trying to sell and was quite happy with it. I was thinking of giving it a try and save a bit for a stylus for the P24 (thank you Bourbon). Input always welcome!

Agree. I have some very tasty p-mounts in the collection. One I have been searching for now for a couple of years, Dynavector DV-10P, seems to NEVER come up for sale anywhere. I am guessing because it's as special as I have read and owners keep vs. sell.

The only DV-10P I ever saw for sale is the one I bought via eBay. Got it for the minimum bid, it was listed as being in the USA but shipped from France, NOS in the box. I wonder how many were sold and if they were sold in the States. It's the cartridge in my current avatar image.

But p-mount cartridges all totally suck and no one should ever buy them.

LOL! You guys are killing me!!! :)

Show 'em those p-mounts folks! here's some of mine anyway!

Just some!!??

I am new to this forum and I love the P-mount...my collection consists of four. (But, it will continue to grow as I learn more everyday!!)

I agree with the others about the Pickering TL-3 cartridge (with DTL-3S stylus), which has a rich, full, clear sound! Recently, I purchased an OMP and AT-142LP cartridges to evaluate--they sound great too! It depends of the "flavor" of sound you want to hear... [I do not have an ADC-PSX40--though, it would be interesting to get one to evaluate that cartridge as well)

My p-mount collection only consists of the Grado Blue w/8MZ, Pickering XL-33U, and Technics P23...but with the addition of the ADC-PSX40 (and the new stylus that arrived today), I'm off to a decent start.

One of my Technics SL-MA1 tables has a straight arm with a removable headshell. I can swap out p-mounts with 1/2" standard carts. This will be fun.

My next turntable will be a very nice Technics SL-MA1 and having a good collection to select the best cart and stylus would good too! We are both on our way in our love for great music.

I still don't understand how p-mounts got such a bad rap!

Because they don't work for everyone's needs, and too many otherwise nice turntables got hobbled with them. And the selection is very limited compared with 1/2" mount, and very few are currently available. And this standard didn't have enough wiggle room for many needs. For the Technics and similar linear arms, T4p mount made sense, but it really shouldn't have been used on pivoted arms, or headshells with the mount built in should have been offered for it commonly.

And a lot of the really awful plasticrap 80's so-called turntables were P-mounts. Unfair to the design system, but unfortunately associated with.

I think this is the main reason for the lack of p-mount respect. I equate this with the initial lack of respect for zoom lenses. At first, zoom lenses weren't very good. Unlike the p-mount cartridges though, camera companies kept making improvements until the zooms gained widespread acceptance. Also, if the proliferation of CDs had been delayed a decade or so, I think p-mount cartridges would have caught on with the general public a bit more.

Regarding the ADC PSX 40/SER IV, it should be noted that all the bodies, 10 through 40 and I through IV, are identical. Also, while the 40/IV stylus is essentially unavailable, the PSX 30 stylus can still be found for reasonable money and the bodies are available as well.

There's currently a body on eBay misidentified as a PSX-A (the part number for the included 1/2" adapter) and Needledaddy-1 has NOS RPSX-30 styli available for stupid money. Together they can be had for less than $50.00.

The RPSX-30 is a 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical, while the RPSX-40 is a 0.2 x 0.7 mil. Both are nude mounts. The only other difference is that the RPSX-40 has a tapered titanium cantilever but they sound very similar.

I don't think that p-mount was ever intended to meet everybody's needs. Broadcasters and audiophiles stayed with the more flexable 1/2 inch mount, which makes sense. T4P was really intended more as a standard for the masses, the folks that would just roll their eyes at the idea of spending time adjusting tracking force and alignment on their turntables, and would have to have that all set up for them by the audio dealer. This is why p-mount was most common on bottom-of-the-line plastic-plinth models, sold as mass-market items with the alignment and tracking force all preset so that neither the appliance/big-box/electronics store nor the buyer had to mess with the set-up of the cartridge. The demise of p-mount was that those mass consumers abandoned turntables for CD players back in the 80s, so the market for p-mount went away, other than the few souls that bought the SL-BD22 that Technics kept in production for several decades.

As my eyesight continues to deteriorate, having a few of those nice full automatic turntables that are "hobbled" with T4P has kept me in this hobby longer than I could have without it. My SL-MA1 and SL-M3 and I are all going strong, in spite of our respective limitations. Plus, I still need to add an Dynavector DV-10P2 and one of the Audiotechnica AT-312 variations to my collection for some reason, as if I don't have enough moving coil T4P cartridges.

Electrically identical. There were some metal-tone variations between the top-end and bottom-end models that don't have anything to do with performance.

I saw that PSX-A cartridge listing the other day, but with 4 PSX bodies I don't need another. Now, if an orange RPSX-25 needle was offered for sale....
