Right. The SER IV and PSX-40 had gold tone bodies. The others were silver.

And I'm sorely tempted to snag the "PSX-A" myself so the OP better get a move on!

For those of you who are more familiar with the ADC PSX-40, I have a question. How will this cartridge sound (with the adaptor) on a Marantz 6300? Would it be a waste on such a mid-fi table? I only ask because I've never used a p-mount with an adaptor - at least for any considerable period of time.

This applies to me as well. Plus, after a couple or three drinks, I tend to screw around with things that I shouldn't screw around with. Fully auto tables offer an idiot proof solution.

While I don't think it would be at all a waste, assuming the arm bearings are in good shape, it wouldn't be optimum, but why deprive yourself? You can always resort to the usual mass-reducing dodges like getting a lighter-weight headshell, and the adaptor (which is a good one, but it does add mass and, compared with an M97ED I have here, about 3mm of height) can be tilted with shims to adjust VTA/SRA. Life's too short to let the perfect be the enemy of the pretty-darn-good. And if you want to save the 40 stylus for that perfect future, there's the 30.

That's good advice.

I wish I had a 40 stylus. The old cantilever was broken, so the info in this thread led me to a couple $40 replacement 30 styli.

There's currently a body on eBay misidentified as a PSX-A (the part number for the included 1/2" adapter) and Needledaddy-1 has NOS RPSX-30 styli available for stupid money. Together they can be had for less than $50.00.

The RPSX-30 is a 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical, while the RPSX-40 is a 0.2 x 0.7 mil. Both are nude mounts. The only other difference is that the RPSX-40 has a tapered titanium cantilever but they sound very similar.

For some reason, I just ain't sold on this ADC series? Whenever I go to transfer an album I always pop on different carts to find the best sound I can. It's always great in the mids, but just lacking in the highs and bottom compared to the other carts I have. The PSX-40 (that's what I have is a good 'all purpose' sound, but it never really 'did it' for me.

Well, they were designed to replace 1/2" mounts, not work with them. I run 'em on a JVC QL-Y55f with a universal mount and love the ease of installation and such. The styli back then usually were cheaper that the 1/2" version too. I agree with another statement above that they were used on mostly lower end tables and that didn't help the perception either (and neither did the advent of CD's shortly afterwards).

Nope, suspension is fine. But it's also going up against some pretty dang good carts too (Empire 875-XLT, A Rat Shack RXT5 with a VL on it, AT 142LP, ect.). It's not 'bad', just not quite as good as the others in the high and low end is all.

A couple years ago i did a side by side test with most of my carts using (of all things) a Grand Funk 'hits' album (it was the first mint album I found in a box, so... lol). On that test anyway, it was the best sound I found for 'Rock and Roll Soul' anyway. In all of the years I have done digital transfers and such, the one thing I found early was every setup and album is different. It's the difference between a great job - and a stellar one IMHO.
 
I've had several of the NOS RPSX-40 styli, and one took much longer to break in than the other two. That was before the thread here on AK about using chemicals to rehab rubber suspensions.

Others have reported the same thing but I doubt ND1 is unaware of the error. I think he just wants to unload some. It looks like he has a lot of 'em.
