Best Live Recordings...

I'm glad I came across his thread. Just the other da I put on 10 years after live and that started me thinking of all thew Live albums I have. So yesterday I was listening to some vinyl and all I put on where LIVE albums. It was a good day of music
 
well,
bought 2day the 1981 release from Heart with same title. Side #2 contains five nice little gems of live recording from their 1980 US tour.
 
Might not be the best but one with high energy...

Some comments on these...first of all, I agree they are both classics. Wore out several vinyl copies of each, back in the day.

Ya Yas has been criticized for the use of overdubs, which Jagger defended as merely restoring poorly recorded guitar parts. Whatever, it is still a great record.

I'm a huge Stones fan, and for capturing them at the height of their powers I'ld select stuff from a few years later- a series of fall 1973 concerts originally recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour and available since then on many different boots - both vinyl and CD - e.g. Headin For An Overload, Definitive Brussels Affair, Jean Clarke Memorial Sonic Barbecue, Bedspring Symphony. Originally soundboard recordings from shows in Brussels and London. Absolutely smokin and fantastic sound quality. The band had been touring for many months and was playing really tight. Mick Taylor left the band shortly thereafter, breaking up their best lineup, IMO. Best versions are HFAO and Brussels Affair, the former slightly clearer, the latter with a slightly better mix. Stones fans are encouraged to pick up either if you ever see them. They both crop up on the bay from time to time.

RE Waiting For Columbus: the remastered CD version is a HUGE improvement sonically, and also has a bunch of extra tracks not on the original vinyl and CD versions.

Elton John - 60. I picked this up for $11 @ BB. There is almost a full day of music on this. He performs a lot of "his" favorites that never got airplay. I love watching the audiance looking out into space while the true fans mouth the lyrics.

11-17-70 definitely does have some redeeming social value... I've always liked the rollicking Burn Down the Mission (an intrinsically great song, IMNSHO).
 
The 2 Johnny Cash prison lp's, especially "Live at Folsom Prison," are excellent.

I guess you could also include the Beatles "Let it Be" as well.

Just picked up a used copy of Dave Matthews "The Central Park Concert" (CD) and it's really good. One of the better live recordings I remember hearing. So much so I'm going to track down a few others listed in this thread.

Kansas - "Two for the Show" had been a live album I liked previously. The content is pretty good but the recording quality is fair to good at best - especially evident the more I upgrade the quality of my gear.

It's a never ending cycle huh? Every upgrade from media to source to amplification to cables to drivers uncovers an opportunity to improve somewhere else! :dunno:
 
Rainbow "On Stage" was pretty good, but I no longer have a copy because I'd loaned it to my brother BEFORE he unloaded his entire collection... all gone.
