My restored Kenwood 700C hasn't been beaten yet. I'm running it with the matching 700M
I love my 1983's Luxman C-02, especially since it was restored to original specs last month. I also like the Audio Research SP-3 that my girlfriend has, or a Marantz 7C in good shape. But the best i know is the Lafayette KT-600 that a friend of me has. I doubt it's still original (it's from arround 1960 and full tube), but it sounds wonderfull everytime i go listen to his setup (with for the rest an EMT950 turntable, custom build 845 based SET amps and orginal Tannoy Arden speakers).

During my journey I enjoyed this CJ. And as nice as it sounded I learned that far cheaper preamps from China can sound as good or better.

I don’t know about best but the little pilot 216a does so many things right that I love it....and it got to get extra props for the meters....
Meters, gotta like meters on a preamp. My first, the Sony TA-2000 had meters but no tubes.

The Adcom GFP 555 is a pretty capable preamp. It’s vintage, sort of. It was made in the early 1990’s I believe...
Dynaco PAT 5 is pretty good sounding and that is DEFINITELY vintage.

I had a Pioneer C21 preamp - very revered. After a full overhaul it still sounded nowhere near as good as its partner M22 poweramp - so I sold it.
One of the coolest & best looking & multi-functional pre's I had played with is the Sony TAE-88e - beautiful machine.
I woud like to get hold of a Technics SU-9070 preamp - the Mk2's look really special.

It ain't that kind of plastic. Have you ever used the LRS gear? But I hear you, it is just something that never crossed my mind or even part of the discussion if I were considering one. We used that gear as the main rig in the sound room for a few years. My first chunk of LRS gear is the 5F70, all plastic except the defeat switch and I'm more than happy with it.I've heard lots of good stuff about that Luxman,the one thing I don't get....plastic switches and knobs?
