So my system, which is currently a macintosh mc-602, c-45, mr-85, mmf 5.3, dbx 14/10, modded pioneer elite pd-65, legacy focus 20/20 and a velodyne hgs 18. I am looking at selling the velodyne and buying two hsu research vtf-15h mk2 or i have a line on a used jl audio f113. The velodyne will play loud and low but does not have the tight controlled base that I like. I am not into movies but music. The legacy 20/20's go fairly low but the sub helps with that bottom octave. I think the two Hsu subs would do the job but would the one f113 be better, the pricing is the same

I feel you can never have enough 20 to 30 hertz base, you can never have to big a power amp. the macintosh mc-602 is a beast of an amp, I also have an mc2300 that put out 440 wpc before it started to get a bit grundgy. The 20/20s sound great with the mc602 but a little 20 hertz reinforcement can't hurt

For a music only system, I'd stick with dual subs. Stereo subs or even distributed subs. And considering your sub budget, you could look at dual Rythmik subs too. Servo driven, and very musical. Sealed and ported models, depending on preference.

FWIW you can make the bass of the Velodyne hgs 18 as tight as
you like with some passive line level EQ filtering into its line input.
RCRC 3dB/octave high pass should do the trick, if you have no room
modes problems, if you do other subwoofers won't really help.

Your current amp is not a good match with the 2020s, I guarantee the speakers bass will be a lot more impressive with a suitable amp.
Look for amps that continue to increase power down to 2 ohms.
From Stereophiles measurements:

Yes the Mac can drive them, but it is giving up a major part of the design, incredible bass.

Couple of very rare refurbished Infinity servo subs currently on eBay. Less than 1/2 the original 1991 MSRP of $2000 and a real bargain at that, I've seen them for a lot less but its been about 2yrs since seeing any anywhere.
With a 250 watt class A/B amp, 12" servo controlled IMG driver, and sealed enclosure, these beasts were designed to keep pace with the Emit tweeter and Emim midrange drivers. This is the same bass driver used in the Infinity RS V, albeit one vs 12 LOL.
I've personally owned one since 1991, paid the original MSRP and feel it was a huge bargain.
I have two 12" Dayton subs connected stereo in my main system, great tonal balance, real bass definition. But as great as they are, when it comes to music my single servo sub embarrasses them quite handily.

Keep the Velodyne and get the two HSU's. When it comes to subs the more the merrier, as long as they're all high quality. Two up front and one someplace else works well.

The Velo is a great subwoofer, if not happy with this subs performance with music IMO you need to audition some servo controlled models. If looking to buy new then check Rythmik Audio, no personal experience with the Rythmik's but have been enjoying the tight controlled bass of a servo sub for decades.
If looking to hear the long resinating decay of the upright bass strings with a real palpable wood body, the skin of the bass drum as it's struck as stretched skin then you owe it to yourself to have a listen to just what servo control is all about.
Here's a pic of the Infinity sub with its partnering monitors, notice the cast aluminum heat sinks running the full length of the right front corner.

For me and I've demoed many at home, The Sunfire True Subwoofer Signature's in Stereo mode is the best way to go for me. They are bullet proof tight, deep bass that is distortion free. Bone rattling, flat down to 16Hz and a nice small 13"x13" footprint.

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a second fathom so I have a matched pair (I am a believer in distributed bass) but one is sufficent. I've never heard better, cleaner, deeper bass.

That's how my Sunfires are, they are barely working, but when called upon ,they perform awesome. I have them crossed over at 40 Hz. So, Pink Floyd and other similar music really blossom's with them. Having them in stereo mode is the only way to go.
Wow, Those fathom subs look really nice. Not inexpensive, nor were the Sunfire's. But they (fathom) do look very bitchen!
