For the inputs I use two XLR to RCA adaptors ( male XLR end ). I believe they're around $5 each.

Sorry for all the questions, but why you didn't use the same connectors for input and output?

I did when I switched back to all XLR to RCA cables from monoprice but only because I had them left over from the Behringer. The Ashly does have a mono summed sub connection that only accepts a 1/4

Thanks for all the info. I have a clearer picture of how everything goes together now. I think I was also reading and old version of the manual the other night. I found the latest version and it does a better job of explaining the use of unbalanced connections:

If either inputs or outputs are used unbalanced, the signal is on the (+) connection and the (-) connection must be tied to ground. A mono phone plug used as an unbalanced connection will automatically ground the ring of the jack which is the (-) connection. When using a stereo plug or XLR connector for unbalanced input or output connections, the signal (-) MUST be tied to ground, or loss of signal level may result.

I was just checking the specs and it says the crossover frequency is "infinitely variable" between 400Hz-8kHz, (40Hz-800Hz using divide by 10 range switch), but the markings on the dial don't look very precise. Is it possible to dial in 550Hz exactly?

You can. I like to do the fine tuning by ear.

I picked up a used XR-1001 today and would appreciate any advice regarding the setup. If I understand correctly, the crossover frequency dial is marked in standard 1/3 octave center frequencies, so the lines between 500 and 1000 should be 630 and 800.

There isn't a lot of space on the dial between the 500 and 630, so I guess I'll start at 500 and tune it by ear from there.

The manual doesn't provide a lot of information regarding the other dials, so if anyone has any advice regarding the best settings to get started with please let me know.
