I’m just a student learning the hobby and sharing what I find. I spent my weekend fixing this 980, so I figured a 'cautionary tale' about Goodwill’s poor taste (that 980 was great) was worth a post. In hindsight it did look like I was calling the 980 junk, sorry that is not what I meant! I’m still learning the ropes of the forum, but I thought we were all here to just talk about turntables . I hope your day gets more cheerful!
That sucks, man. I cannot believe them dirty so and so's at GW, sometimes.
I went last week, they were asking eight dollars for a bottle of Axe shampoo. They've lost the way. Sorry about the table, they're actually quite good.
As for this medium we converse on, always remember, subtlety is lost, and understanding goes a long way. Thanks for commenting, see ya on the boards.

OK. I would have looked for another avenue to sell it or donate it instead of throwing it away.

Yeah, I am lucky in that regard. Being a hoarder of usable things (no stacks of old TV guides, but lots of garden hose, electrical cord, and building materials, lol) I just place things at the end of my driveway. Living on a very busy street, I rarely wait more than an hour before things just disappear.
Reuse, recycle, repurpose. Yep yep.
Mr. Doug, I still haven't hammered out that return issue, but I must say, the sound coming from this crooked cantilever, forgotten BIC is rather good!
Nah, he seems like a bright lad. I always say that this medium is devoid of inflection, and mistakes are easily made.

It happens, my man. I'm enjoying my 5 dollar BIC 1000, and while I looked at what you said to look at, it still gets within an inch of the arm, and then starts making gear noises. No matter, Queen "Killers" sounds absolutely fantastic!
Sure wish I was headed to Minnesota sometime soon, and could get your magic hands on this dude. I really like the sound.

Where do you keep finding these BIC tables?? Good job, the 1000 is pretty darn sweet. I got mine for 5 bucks, and am working out a few issues with Doug's help.
I guess I will look into becoming a subscriber, I need to work out some issues currently. Does your 980 have the integral mat? I wonder if replacing it will do anything.

Unfortunately, headshells for the original BIC 900 series tables are very scarce, these days, and are fairly costly if you can find one. You also have to be careful that everything is there as many times, they are missing the wiring or the M/A slide.
The 1000 is quite a bit more complex than the other tables in that series with the two motors and various micro switches and relays necessary for running a cycle, starting and stopping the platter motor, arm movement, and muting switch, etc. However, they are reliable when maintained and adjusted right. I bought mine in like new condition many years ago, now, and it has been workiing great.

It sounds like gears are either slipping or there are teeth missing but it's hard to tell without seeing it. I would probably see the problem fairly quickly by looking at it.
And, I 've been meaning to say you stole that 1000 - 5 bucks!

I just bet you could. Seems very mechanical, which isn't so spooky. I have hand-turned that big red gear, and observed all the others, and I see no broken teeth. It was not moving much at all, initially, and likely is just gummed up. I don't know, I will try again soon. Such a precarious thing to try and get at, isn't it?
I will give this an attempt. On that same line of thinking, last year I placed a cd player I had tried and tried to fix in my back seat. Completely forgot about it for 5 months or so.
Imagine my surprise when, as walking to the trash can, I thought "oh hell, let's plug it up and make darn sure..." and it worked.
As it was a cheap Fisher, and my buddy had an all-Fisher system minus a cd player, I gave to him. He loves it.
Too bad I never took any electronics training, lol.
