BIC Venturi Formula 6 Spec II

Hi

I have the oppurtunity to buy a pair of 4 way BIC Venturi Formula 6 Spec II
speakers from the late 70's. The are equipped with one horn tweeter, one mid horn and one coaxial woofer with dynamic mid-tone. Theese are in mint condition both technically.
and cosmetically. They look pretty advanced with the coaxial woofer, manual adjustments for mid/ treble, music style and the venturi bass port.

I'm intending to use them as speakers for a second vintage
system. Particularly for rock music.

I wonder if some of you AK'ers have owned or tried theese speakers.
Are they worth buying/ keeping ?

Appreciate your replies..

I used to sell them. Reliable, they sound ok, maybe a little bright. They weren't real expensive in their day. I wouldn't use them for critical listening. so, so power handling.

6 ii

I've had a set of 6s since the 70s. Loved them but mine are NOT the SPEC II. I'm not sure what mine are. They are 3 way with twin tweeters, a mid horn and woofer. The popular ones are the 6 speaker jobs.

ANYWAY, for the right price, they are a good grab. I'm thinking $150 maybe $200. (hopefully much less). The fancy 6 speaker jobs will bring $400-$500 which just freaks me.

The thing with BIC Formulas. You will either love them or hate them. Seems like thats the way it is.

Had a pair of B.I.C.6's with 6 speakers... 4 speakers and 2 horns. I had them hooked to a Pioneer sx 1250. I loved them. They could easily handle the power of that reciever. Sounded pretty good too.

For the right price, and for what you want to listen to, I'd say go for it. I like my BIC's, they're efficient and sound good on Boston.

I haven't heard them in years but at the time I thought they were OK and thought they were better than many "audiophile approved" speakers of the time such as ARs, Advents, KLHs and such; I thought they had pretty good clarity and dynamics.

My opinion you understand. The important opinion here is yours; what do you think of them? ;)

Can anyone post pics of the original Formula 6 woofers?

I just picked up a pair of the 6-speaker models and I think the woofers have been swapped out.

Thanks,
Turborusty

Not the "Spec II" and they're the 5 and 7 (not the 6) but maybe these are helpful to one or another of the earlier posts :-P

I had these for a short while before I sold them . I was`nt that impressed . The mid was not original . I did build new grills for them .

Thank you for that!

Interesting, mine appear to have a cheap, rolled-surround Taiwanese replacement woofer.........and thus, have quite lackluster bass response.

The other drivers are all original. I have similar covers, but mine leave the Venturi port at the bottom uncovered.

BTW, you did beautiful work on your grilles! Though your phenolic rings were missing from the tweets.

I like the big, stout cabinets, maybe I can do something worthwhile with them.

E-WAVE ! They were very nice cabinets and I did`nt want to butcher them but when I had them I had never heard of the e-wave modification , and I only paid $25 for them so I did`nt have much to lose . Anyway I did make out pretty good on ebay but they were a bitch to ship .

I'm highly impressed with the beautiful craftsmanship! and Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Does any one know of a web (site) that explains the inner working of the "BIC" venturi? Just curious.

Thanks in advance....

BIC tweeter/mid

I have a pair of those mid/tweet horn units like that pictured in the ad for the Venturi 7.
salvaged them from a big old set of BIC. Any good use for them??
