Bic Venturi formula six !!

Stephen J

Suum Cuique
Greetings,
I have recently acquired a pair of Bic Venturi Formula Six speakers. They are in what I consider pretty rough shape. I remember reading about them somewhere.Should I put any time and $ into them?

What's rough about them? Mine are on their 3rd set of woofers. After the first woofer change in the '80's (and after blowing countless mids and tweeters) I completely gutted the entire mid/tweeter plastic piece and sealed it. I 'outboarded' some Dayton mids and air motion transformers in separate boxes (see photo) which are bi-amped by a second amplifier. The outboard enclosures allow me to experiment with placement which can really change the way they sound.

The BIC boxes are great ported enclosures- the original drivers were not up to snuff, in my opinion. But I like crap LOUD so I can't dog them too bad.

Hard to say. Some folks really like the BIC Venturi series. I thought the were a bit boomy. But, they can be tamed, with some port dampening. It's all about if you want to spend the time to get them where you want them?

Back in the 70s a pal of mine was looking for speakers and being an "audiophile" I suggested he buy Dyanaco A-25s, the speakers I was using at the time. Instead he bought some BICs with an 8" woofer and a little square horn tweeter and I'll be damned if they weren't far superior to the Dynas---better clarity, better tonality and much better dynamics.

I had a pair of Venturi's back in the 80's in my VW Rabbit. When measured horizontally they were 1" wider than the interior of the back seat so I took a 2X4 and a screw jack and widened the body behind the front seats. After installing the speakers I let the body collapse back to almost normal dimension's and the speakers stayed in place for years My buddy Dales kids would come out and lean on the car to feel it vibrate.
Great efficient speakers!!!!

That's funny!

Great efficient speakers!!!!

They are/were efficent. That was the appeal for me. I knew there'd be some haters here. In my opinion, the worst part about them was the piezo tweeters. Actually they were they only drivers that didn't eventually burn out but they made the high end raspy. My 6's are so un-BIC right now... Only the ported enclosures remain.

No, really, there were better speakers and there were worse ones...

The Formula 6's were really great club speakers. I bought a pair at a Goodwill for $7 about two years ago and played them all the time. Very efficient, not natural-sounding, but terrific for disco, rock and roll. The woofer cones were pushed in, but I later used tape to pull them out. One of the few times that actually worked for me!
