Big time CL score!! ESS Transtatic I & Phase Linear

Just picked up these from CL. They weigh 130 lbs each. Pretty rare speaker from what I can tell. They have RTR electrostats in them. Also got a Phase Linear 4000 preamp and a guitar.

Got them from the original owners son. He already sold the Phase Linear amps that went with it in the quad set up.

Leo Malet (August 2002): ESS Trans-Static I 3 way hybrid speakers. Uses KEF B139 oval woofer in transmission line, KEF B-110 in short transmission line and 3 RTR stat panels for tweeters. These were among the top 3 or 4 high end systems in the early 70s. They are each 41.5 inches tall, 15.75 inches deep and 19.75 inches wide. Weight: 139 lbs (each). The speaker consists of the following components:
Woofer. The Trans-static uses a flat, aluminum stressed, plastic diaphragm woofer which is totally free from cone break-up or distortion. It uses an extremely heavy high gauss magnet structure with a system resonance of less than 15hz. Midrange.The midrange features a magnet assembly larger than many 12in woofers. Tweeter.The RTR electrostatic tweeters in the Trans-static have an absolutely linear frequency response from below 1250 hz to 32 khz.
Tom Howe (December 2004: The comment about the ESS Transtatic 1 tweeters being single ended is incorrect. The RTR tweeters used were the same as the Infinity Servo Statik 1 and 1A system(s). They are push-pull units that were made with a plastic grid assembly and closely spaced insulated wires for the stators, much like (conceptually) the Sound Lab, Acoustat and Dennison units.Phil Chance (November 18, 2005):

Pulled the cover off one because the woofer is buzzing. Flipped it over and still have a buzz. Might need to sit for a bit.

Wonderful find!
Just for the heck of it, try loosening the screws on the buzzing woofer to see if the basket is somehow tweaked.

Maybe I'm misreading the picture, but it looks like the surround has completely detached from the top of that B139.

It is not detached. The flat center section just sticks out.

I am in the restoration process on this 58 Westy camper. I will be hanging out with about 300 67 and older buses this weekend. Our club puts on a VW camp out this weekend.

Let the offending woofer sit in the sun for a while until the glue softens and repossition the cone.

You probably won't even need any new glue.

Its amazing what all you guys find out there, those look like they will be a great sounding pair of speakers when your finished, now I just have to keep my eyes out for a pair.

I have them playing right now with some panels out on each speaker! They sound very good with just a Sansui 8080db for power. Can't wait till i work out the bugs and give them proper power.
