Generating a wall of sound large enough to keep the police from approaching your home? Knocking down small buildings? Putting the fear of $deity into the neighbor's nosy dog? Making "boom cars"?

Or maybe making sure that the police don't even have to be called, because they can clearly hear what you're playing down at the station?

For the record, I've measured my Yamaha C-80 to be capable of ~12V output at the onset of visible clipping as monitored on o-scope. Of course getting there is contingent on input level too.

2 out of 3 developed power supply issues. I was using them for work, not play. Crowns proprietary component ID system made it impossible to have my trusted and immediately available tech effect repair forcing me to rent other amps while still upside down on my investment in the CE's.

That event occurred too soon after a catastrophic meltdown of a MT5000. The MT went out in such a spectacular blaze of glory that it's repair cost was not justified, sold it's carcass on ebay for 125 bucks, just enough to pay for one of 8 necessary C8R2241 kits, it actually only took out 4 but we elected to recone all 8 at the time.

The CE's were replaced with BGW GTA's and GTB's which i am sure are still running strong today. If i had a factory service center within a practical driving distance for the crowns, my feelings would probably be different. But as it stands my experience with them hit me way too hard in the wallet, and potentially cost me future work.

For the record, the only other power amp i've ever had fail during a gig was a Peavey CS 1200, and that was due to operator ignorance. The power switch had fused one pair of it's contacts together so the amp would power up as soon as mains power was applied whether the switch was on or off, however the switch still needed to be in the "on" position for the fan to run, you can easily guess the rest of the story.
 
Interesting. All three of mine have been rock solid, and I know I'm (at least) second owner on all of them. The CE1000 and CE2000, OTOH, I've heard had some fairly widespread issues early on, but they're completely different amps and somewhat surprising as being plain old "big iron" amps you'd expect almost just the opposite.
 
I loved the MT's, but the incident with the 5000 left me gunshy of the macro-techs. The CE's were part of a fire sale from a small sound company going belly up, they couldn't have been more than 6 months old and we assume were operated by competent people. They were trouble free for the better part of a year, both failures occurred during power up or power down, i'm not sure which. I should make it clear that they didn't give up in the middle of a set.

FWIW, i really try not to bash or badmouth the brand beyond the occasional snark comment above. If someone asks, i explain. On the surface i have no problem acknowledging Crown as a leader in the industry with some first rate product. But, when it comes to personal experience, it gets personal.
