Cowdog.... I think you'll be fine. Remember to put a good seal when you reinstall the basket frame on the motorboard- Whether you still have the rubber gasket or you have to resort to some silicone gel....keep us up to speed here-

I've come across a pair that might be affordable. I've rarely seen comments on these and these are the only pair I've come across......

Being a Mach One & Mach Two supporter, I couldn't be more pleased with the one speaker I bought powered by a mere 50 watt Fisher. I should take delivery of a restored pair of series one this week, where I will drive them with the sta-2080. I clean my ears daily, I'm 54 years of age...I sometimes have to say 'Huh' when I don't hear people mumbling jumbo....but my ears absolutely love the 601 design...no matter the room size. And the bigger the room, the more I'm in love. I think I'll make a spot in the bed for my series 2 cabinet....

I'm onboard as well....Killer Save! And without the panic! We salute....

And I'm running into the issue of alot of big speaker cabs being collected here. The house isn't THAT big. I might have to start doing the dreadful listings of goodbye to some....I know the Mach Ones will stay....and I'm convinced the Bose 601 at least ties the Mach Twos (mint condition I might add).....And the bumping the EQ's low end brings the 601 bass to my standard- a mere +2db @36Hz, -3db @60Hz, -2db@190db.

Hah, I'm 55. Losing a little in the highs with one ear, but not bad. Tinnitus is the worst of it for me. I love my 901 speakers. One of my better investments. The 2080 is a nice vintage shack receiver. New for 1981 http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/html/1981/h012.html 80wpc, more than my 2000 which is 75wpc. I'd love to have either a 2100 or 2300. I know the "mumbling" thing too well. The more people talking the worse it gets.

Heck, I still have a pair of 501 I'm working on. Original woofers gone. I have some nice RS poly woofers that spec out correctly for the same size cabinet.

That's pretty cool work there. The weight might not seem like much to you, but when you consider how fast that cone is moving in and out, a half gram can make a huge difference. So do go lightly on any coating. Most of us prefer super glue for cone repairs and such.

Just waiting to hear back from the seller. I'm hoping they might be interested in a trade, other wise I'll have to work something out. I don't normally spend more than $100 (very rarely) on speakers, so $250 (asking) is up there for me. I really need to unload a bunch of speakers, like 2-dozen or so.

Thanks, that's why I'm a little concerned about sandwiching the laminated construction paper patch. I'm hoping that it's not heavier than factory in that corner.. I guess there's no easy way to tell. Would there be an easy way to compare a normal woofer to the repaired one for sonic differences?

I kept the symmetrical balance in the back if my mind during my earlier suggestion. I don't think you'll notice the difference sonically, but when in doubt, you can work the repaired area down with 250-300 grit sandpaper. A little bit at a time. If you wish to tweak the balance, super glue matching pieces of coffee filter exactly 180° from the repaired surface on the underside....in fact, the more I think on it, that's my suggestion....just my 2¢-

Somebody call the shrinks...I went ahead and splurged on a nice pair of series I...sorry for the bidding participants. It just seemed a better dollar value to buy nice refoamed set. Cabs are nice and series I have the symmetrical switch too Bose-Bashers Welcomed!

My favorite trick on these is to replace the 4 tweeters, 2 with an emit r type ribbon and 2 with a soft dome.
Well it was better to have done that when apex jr had the ribbons cheap.
Or you can do 1 piezo, 1 soft dome and 1 ribbon and leave 1 stock ...
Or piezo, soft dome, hard dome and ribbon ...
Or mylar, SD, HD and stock ...
Or - well you get the idea

I am picking up a 901 series 1 driver set tomorow. I already have cabs. I'm gonna replace 1 -2 of the 4" with a soft dome cos these are 8 ohm speakers. In 2 of the circuits I'll put a soft dome. The lows are taken up by a subwoofer ... but they still lack high, even the eq in ... maybe I can run it without the eq if I put 2-3 soft domes in.

Yeah that sounds like a fun project.

When I was in my late teens I studied the Bose 901 ads, then using my drafting tools and drew up plans to build my own 901 speakers. Closest driver I could find, back in the 70's, was a 4" full range sold by RS. I was never able to save up enough money, had a 65 mustang I was restoring and a GF, so audio took a back seat.

601, however, would be a tad more challenging due to the different angles your working with.

Aluminum Cold Roll bracketing....you can twist & pivot the tweeters to your heart's desire! Besides, I have this lonely series II that'll give me the exact geometry for duplication the cabinet/speaker placements. I found a series II top mount in Canada. But it was without the xover, and the shipping was not worth the trouble. Instead, I'll have a look at the aluminum bracketing of the series I and cut my towers' top to the approx slopes. Just viewing, it seems the increased the slope a few degrees with series III
