A 12" woofer doesn't necessarily need equalization to reach lower bass notes. With multiple 4" full range speakers, an equalizer is essential.

While the 901 and 301 have been mentioned, dont overlook the 601 series 1 or 2. They will probably need refoaming but that is easy and inexpensive.

Because we know Bose used cheap drivers. A “compromised” design because they used cheap drivers. How else do you think they could afford such a huge marketing campaign?
There’s a plethora of modern speaker designs out now using multiple small not-cheap drivers. By your theory, they’re all “compromised” and should be shunned, as a sleeping dog.
Huh? Those drivers were designed for a specific purpose. Find me a line array with an active EQ and you may have an argument. These were designed for that purpose. The "compromises" in the 901 design are many. Tweeters would be nice, but aren't compatible with the active EQ. The highly resonant blow molded plastic enclosure is a major compromise. I could continue, but it would be just piling on. You don't have any point here that I can see, other than making a strawman argument.
BTW, yes Bose used cheap drivers in most applications, can't argue that point either. They used cheap enclosures. They typically used rudimentary crossovers, the exceptions typically being were a better crossover allowed for cheaper drivers. A cap and a lightbulb worked for them a long time.

Obviously you didn’t read what I wrote. Most line arrays have a woofer, midranges and tweeters…. So apples and oranges, not worth bringing up. But you did… to make what point? The 901s aren’t line arrays. You didn’t know that?
Of course, the EQ was to push the small drivers at their frequency extremes. Have to! Each one is used as a full-range driver! So no revelations there, either…

Whatever your supposed point, my point was that it is very common to use multiple small woofers to act in unison as one larger bass driver. It allows the building of tower configurations with narrow front exposures, where 12/15/18” are just too broad. Some use PRs on the broader side real estate. Some use internal woofers to assist or tune the front-mounted drivers.
I already stated that Bose used cheap drivers, so why are you using that to assist in making “your” point? Strawman argument, maybe?
As for cabinet construction, there’s also a plethora of those out there, even in modern offerings. CNC routers makes it doubly cheap these days.
