Brett A's Playlist.

for some reason this thread reminds of the radio shows I listen to which are like listening to this blog. (...)
It is interesting even for me to see how all-over-the-place my listening is. I'm a little suprised that I haven't settled into any real groove (except for all the Scott Walker a while back). Usually I have periods of burrowing deep into one artist or genre. Not so much yet.

This morning, with coffee, it was another run through of Dwight Yoakam - Long Way Home. (cd)
attachment.php

Followed by Spurts - The Richard Hell Story (cd) which is a collection mostly consisting of tracks from the "Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation"

This morning's first LP was Robin Kenyatta - Girl From Martinique (This is an ECM lp)
attachment.php

Thta was a bit too wierd even for me this morning, so after 10 minutes or so, I switched to Will Oldham - Black/Rich Music (45rpm 12" ep)
attachment.php

The ride to work was filled with Marianne Faithful - Broken English (just my favorite 4 or 5 songs off of it)
attachment.php

...before switching over the The B-52's first album.

This has got to have one of the best opening tracks of any debut album. Planet Claire not only has pink air, it has whirling organ chords, lazy surf guitar, bongos and even a gong all churning out this tight little groove that is a real shining example of musical efficiency IMO.

Last night as I was installing the new watchband on my old watch (the pins are not removable, so I have to do a little surgery w/an Exacto knife and contact cement) I listened all the way through Dr John, The Night Tripper - Gris Gris (cd) An all-too-overlooked masterpiece if I may be so bold to say. A nice sounding recording too.

attachment.php

Followed by Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and his Nigerian Soundmakers - Sound Time (cd). This is a must-have for anyone who loves pre-synthpop, pre-hip hop African groove music. It was a rare find for me and I regard it right up there with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Thomas Mapfumo, Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens in my list of amazing urban African musicians from the 1970's and 80's

Just a quick plug for the fidelity on the B-52s first album. Simple, deep, effective mix.

Indeed. I like their second album almost as much as the first, though I prefer the production values of the first. "Strobe Light" on the 2nd album cracks me up every time I hear it.

This morning's commute, it was Heather Maloney - Cozy Razor's Edge (cd)

Later...

Willie Nelson - You Don't Know Me; The Songs of Cindy Walker (cd) This is a really good recording of some really great music, I highly recommend it!
attachment.php

On the Rek-O-Kut: Treasure Isle Hottest Hits Vol 3.- Various Artists (a real low-quality Jamaican LP of mid-sixties rock steady hits that Duke Reid recorded in the studio he built upstairs from his liquor store. There's a really fantastic 2cd set of these recordings called "Duke Reid's Treasure Chest/ Treasure Isle Rock Steady.
attachment.php

A bit later, I took a drive down to Amherst and listened to Townes VanZandt - No Deeper Blue I think this was his last studio album. It's got some terrifically dark and brilliant songs on it.

This is one of my favorite TVZ songs. It's on this album.
Marie (live solo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXJPVRw3hmk
I stood in line and left my name
Took about six hours or so
Well, the man just grinned like it was all a game
Said they’d let me know
I put in my time till the pocono line
Shut down two years ago
I was staying at the mission till I met marie
Now I can’t stay there no more

Fella ’cross town said he’s lookin’ for a man
To move some old cars around
Maybe me and marie could find a burned-out
Van and do a little settlin’ down
Aw, but I’m just dreamin’, I ain’t got no ride
And the junkyard’s a pretty good ways
That job’s about a half week old besides
It’d be gone now anyway

Unemployment said I got no more checks
And they showed me to the hall
My brother died in georgia some time ago
I got no one left to call
Summer wasn’t bad below the bridge
A little short on food that’s all
Now I gotta get marie some kind of coat
We’re headed down into fall

I used to play the mouth harp pretty good
Hustled up a little dough
But I got drunk and I woke up rolled
A couple of months ago
They got my harp and they got my dollar
Them low life so and so’s
Harps cost money and I ain’t got it
It’s my own fault I suppose

The pocono’s down but the chesapeak’s runnin’
Two freights everyday
If it was just me I’d be headed south
But marie can’t catch no train
She’s got some pain and she thinks it’s a baby,
Says we gotta wait and see
In my heart I know it’s a little boy
Hope he don’t end up like me

Well, the man’s still grinnin’ says he lost my file
I gotta stand in line again
I want to kill him but I just say no
I had enough of that line my friend
I head back to the bridge, it’s getting kinda cold
I’m feelin’ too low down to lie
I guess I’ll just tell marie the truth
Hope she don’t break down and cry

Marie she didn’t wake up this morning
She didn’t even try
She just rolled over and went to heaven
My little boy safe inside
I laid them in the sun where somebody’d find them
Caught a chesapeak on the fly
Marie will know I’m headed south
So’s to meet me by and by

Marie will know I’m headed south
So to meet me by and by
