Stax 50th Anniversary (disc 2)

Jah Lion - Columbia Colly This is an all-too-overlooked Lee Perry gem. Check it out if you're into early Dub. Pretty sure this was recorded in 1976.

Al Green/Teddy Pendergrass - Back to Back Hits. This CD alternates singles from the two men. I had forgotten all about Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" It's Soooo good!

You're most welcome. I thought of you when I posted this. Glad you checked in.

Some traks from this album (1 or 2 of them) are on the Countryman soundtrack I think. It's very smooth and mello beginning to end.
(Low key/Laid back)

Al Green's Greatest Hits Seems Al green only wrote one tune and just changed the words (I think) as he recorded it over and over again.

Bob Dylan and The Band - Planet Waves

Bill Callahan a.k.a. Smog - A River Aint Too Much to Love I pulled over next to the river to take this shot.

(...)Gotta agree on your Al Green comment.
I know, right? I just bought this "best of" collection b/c the wife and I are staying together and i wanted to have that song in the collection. We were listening to it in the car today and I honestly thought the same song was starting over and over. Hitting the advance track button is just like hitting the track repeat button.

But I know that's probably a personal thing; to some people, everything the Skatalites recorded sounds the same.

Last night, in a darkened room, I sat and listened to Sun Ra - Jazz in Silhouette (lp). I really, really love this album. Maybe because it was one of the first jazz records I got. It's not the type of music most associated with Sun Ra, this album is sweet and melodic (and mono)
Here's the opening track; Enlightenment.

Dig. :smoke:

I followed Sun Ra with Don Pullen - Montreux Concert (lp).

attachment.php

Don, if you didn't know, is badass. He plays piano at times with the back of his hand (as in calluses on his knuckles). And does so to great effect.

Then, before going up to bed, I listened to most of disc two of The Name of This Band is Talking Heads (cd).

After listening to Al Green, I got "Take Me to the River" stuck in my head and wanted to hear the Talking Heads' cover of it. I realized the version I wanted to hear is actually on Stop Making Sense which I don't have. (Gonna haf' to address that.) But the version on The Name of this Band mostly scratched that itch.

Is that an ABC Impulse logo at the lower right on your Sun Ra LP?? I've never seen that cover art before. I've got the CD reissue on Evidence. A fantastic record, indeed.

Yep. It's a green-ringed ABC Impulse! label. (It says stereo but I don't believe it.) It says it was remixed and remastered in 1973. This LP is dated 1975.

Ah, OK. Very nice. Thanks for the extra pics. :thmbsp: I have a few of those green/blue ABC/Impulse's and they sound very good.

More Talking Heads. This time it was More Songs About Buildings and Food.

Then, in the dark of the evening, Eric Dolphy and Booker Little - Far Cry (lp)

Last night, after the Eric Dolphy lp, I listened to this new aquisition: Toshiko Akiyoshi - Notorious Tourist from the East(lp)

attachment.php

Toshiko plays silky smooth but at the same time, with great traction and depth. This LP is a studio recording with the following line up:
Toshiko Akiyoshi – piano
Steven Huffsteter – trumpet
Gene Cherico – bass
Billy Higgins – drums

James Taylor - JT
(A litte JT lp on this Sunday AM.)

Now: (11:20am)
The Original Reggae Hitsound of The Ethiopians; All the Hits & Much More! (1966 to 1972)

I have fond memories of the time first getting to know Manhattan. I bought this CD at Venus Records on St. Marks (It's gone now). It was really exciting to go the The City and find all this music I was familiar with (from friends and cassette copies) but had no way to buy before then. (This was pre-internet commerce)

Back and forth to the hardware store and supermarket:

The Police-Zenyatta Mondatta (cd) Looks like Sting is diggin' the fall foliage.

Last night on the couch with the little Mississ:
Tom Petty - Wildflowers (cd) I just got this a couple weeks ago and this is my first listen-through. My wife and I agreed that we've never heard a collection of such relatively rich and beautiful songs paired the dumbest sophomoric rock tunes. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

attachment.php

Then she went to watch TV and I sat in the dark ans spun John Coltrane - Coltrane's Sound (lp)

attachment.php

Followed by Portishead - Dummy (lp). Bought this LP down in The City, maybe even the same day I bought The Ethiopians back 14 years ago or-so. I paid the unreasonable ( for me at the time) sum of $22 for this LP and I didn't even own a turntable! It just had a very high cool-factor.

Yesterday on the way to work, I finished the Police Zenyatta Mondatta cd
attachment.php

and went immediately on to Destiny's Child #1 Hits
attachment.php

Then last night through headphones as I fell asleep, it was Scott Walker - The Drift (This is my bedside CD setup)

A little catching up:

Ok, I'm not exactly sure where this fits in, but it was a recent morning commute

Hamza El Din - Al Oud
This is a CDr copy of the LP I got back in Ann Arbor, MI in 1992 while staying with a guy I met at the Dead show who let me camp out in his driveway while I fixed the motor in '71 VW Westfaila. (It needed a new cylinder head)
attachment.php

Here's the LP:
attachment.php

Yesterday morning, in the house and on the commute, it was Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I See a Darkness. This is got to be one of the top 10 albums anyone has ever made....ever.
attachment.php

Then, last night, I fell asleep listening to Scott Walker - Scott 2 (CDr of my LP).
Here's a period shot of Scott.

This morning, i spent a little more time listening than usual.

First, it was side one of The Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah (United Artists lp)

attachment.php

Then side 2 of my recently acquired, somewhat scratchy $3 mono 6-eye pressing of Miles Davis - Kind of Blue which i spun on the 'ol Rek-O-Kut L-37
attachment.php

Followed by The Spinanes - Arches and Isles (cd) which started in the house and continued for the first 10 minutes or-so of my ride to work.
attachment.php

Then 6 or 8 songs from George Jones-County Heart (lp/CDr). With an album cover like this, how could you NOT be interested!
attachment.php

Some interesting selections! Need some feedback on the Al Oud album. Thanks!

Hamza El Din was a masterful oud player. The oud is a North African (Nubian in this case) style of lute (the predecessor of the guitar). It's fretless and usually has 10, 11 or 13 strings, in six or seven 'courses'

The album I just posted is my favorite (I only have 4). It's from 1965.

You need to get it.
