Well I have them! They are in dire need of refinishing. Corners are pretty rounded off from the miles, but I'm thinking of patching and squaring with plastic wood, sanding and repainting. Did Altec ever make beige VOTTs? I think they would blend into the scenery better where I'm going to use them.
The 421As were nice, he said he had gotten a number of cabinets with drivers years ago and had sold most of it off. The drivers have been reconed in STL by a guy named Lloyd something, apparently The Man in STL, and stored away without actually being used. Based on a tiny bit of research I learned these are instrument speakers and may not go real low. They certainly are beasts and I would not kick them out of bed.
However, I have some heavy 15" CTS woofers and would like to explore using them, or if that doesn't work, see what else AKers may have. I'll probably start a new thread for that. I've seen woofers matched to such cabinets here on AK but I don't know how to actually do it. Where to find specs on this cabinet, first...I'll be tapping the Altec gurus!

Tox, if Lloyd reconed them, they will be fine. They still will be bass guitar speakers, tho.
Thought you might know who that was, Dave. They looked really nicely done. He said he would let them go for $175 if I bought a set of 4, so if anyone is interested, he has another ad up for the drivers. I just don't have the will to spend that much on this project. I can be happy with something that doesn't say Altec on the back, and maybe even get better bass extension for less $.

If a fella were looking to load a pair of 815 or 817 boxes for high quality PA duty, those would be a genuine bargain. 421's just don't quite cut the mustard for hifi in most circumstances, and their value is better realized when they're used in their intended application, compared to other Altec woofers they compromise some low end extension and fidelity for increased mid band output and ruggedness.
