Busted Beauty - CR-1020 wood Case Repair

Recently got a beautiful CR-1020 in my hands but unfortunately the shipping co. Dropped it at some point and even with the bubble wrap it damaged the beautiful wood case.

The rest of the unit is nearly flawless given age and I really don't want to give it up should this be something I can Fix with a little time and effort.

I've read some good posts from others who've done repairs. Given the type of damage seen in the pics is this something that I can fix with wood putty, sandpaper and re-veneer? Or...would it make more sense to rebuild the side, sand and stain? Not sure the veneer on these can handle a Good sand.

Unless you have a furniture pro look@ it, that's a tough DIY job to do neatly & match the finish. Damn good receiver. I ran the CR 1020 for > 20 yrs before I damaged it by being a schmuck.
 
At that point, I think you're better off finding a good woodworker to replicate the case.
 
Ouch, that's sickening to look at. I can't imagine a repair in such a prominent part of the unit not sticking out like a sore thumb. I'd either have one made or maybe you can find a replacement case from another receiver with toasted innards. We recently moved into our new condo and my CR1020 sat on my lap while my wife drove, ain't no way I was letting anything happen to this gorgeous piece of audio jewelry...

After reviewing thread and speaking with a handy friend I plan to remove existing veneer, patch with wood putty, and re-veneer the entire box when I get the time. For now the thing sounds beautiful and most would not even notice unless I mentioned it.
