For the record, I dont feel guilty AT ALL. as you can see from the photos is a beauty. It played swimmingly so when he started saying... "hey the tubes are shot" as his first correspondence and then said "oh thats what a tech said". I had spider senses and just let him dig his own hole. then after it was opened up by a tech he sealed his fate with me. and im just getting my popcorn ready and seeing what ridiculousness is out there. If you listen to the video you can tell its a group of numbskulls.

He bought a used piece of equipment - he shouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t work like new.

In the nicest possible way I’d tell him he had the opportunity to exam and test it before he left and he’s now living the vintage gear life.

The buyer has spent a lot of time and money to 1) purchase the amp and 2) have it evaluated in LA. It's hard to figure out his end game, but he had the option to try it out and passed. A big and heavy box, how did he get the amp back to LA? And how has he passed up the temptation to try it out? Crazy...
 
He probably did something dumb to it like turned the amp on with no speakers connected to it and now he wants you to pay for whatever his idiot mistake was.

Vintage tube gear is definitely an all sales are final kind of deal though. But it may be prudent to film all the gear working together correctly before selling items in the future, I have done that before selling over eBay, especially since that is the general public rather than enthusiasts such as through barter town.
 
Sounds like you're either dealing with an idiot, or a wannabe flipper who is trying to get some money back to cover the cost of his ignorance. In other words, an idiot.

While me and stupid are on a first-name basis, I don't do well with other idiots. I'd tell him to piss off, and block his number....

I have to say, this buyer stinks to the extreme.

1) He flew out there to buy it cash from you,
2) He doesn't try it out at your place. How is that even possible?

I know it happens. A buyer grabbed an espresso machine I was selling from me. Paid and left. I offered to show him how to use it (it is an espresso machine after all) and he refuses the offer. Then I get an email from him saying it is broken and he wants his money back. I tell him I'm sorry, but this was a cash sale as is. I gave him the opportunity to try it out before he paid for it. Then I said, that being said, this is what I think your problem is, and described to him how to resolve this common issue. I never heard back from him.

3) He gets it home and he still doesn't try it out, because, get this, he has no preamp! Is this starting to stink to you too?

4) He then gets his tech to check it out. He says... Hmmm, did you sell him a subscription of tubes with them? I don't think so. Then, after you dispute his techs, he gets more involved. Really? And he hasn't tried it out yet?

I don't understand how the seller can have any money if he manages all his business deals like this. It reeks!

Personally, I would advise the OP to completely disengage from him. If you really want to push it, the next time he contacts you, just give him your lawyers contact information. Do not say anything more to him.

The problem is that the more you engage with him, the more he will continue to engage with you. He is looking for an angle that will work. This is just another rip-off scam.

I have a friend who is a cranky shop owner, rebuilds speakers, mostly. I stop by sometimes just to hear the stories, and he's got a lot! Most of the best ones involve notable figures in the audio and music industries going back more than 40 years, but it's the stories about idiots he enjoys telling most, I think. And lately, those are beginning to outnumber the former, it seems.

Those KT88s getter flashing in the "tech" video look fresh to me, and I think I ought to know, as I own and use (4) MC-275LEs since 2010, with gobs of hrs. on them, with the OEM provided tubes !

Visually, when the getter`s flashing edge chrome feathering has a brownish/white ring at the transition to clear glass, then the tubes, IMO/E are getting long in the tooth.
And with Mc.`s unique Unity Coupled output stage design, which is very conservative on the output tubes ensuring very, very long life.
Something stinks about this buyer and his "chosen Techs" questionable offhand visual assessment of the KT-88s !

I own a super duper Amplitrex AT-1000 full voltage and complete tube tester.

Have the bozo send them to me for complete testing, I`ll even offer to do it for free, and even pay out of my own pocket to ship them back to him with pictures of each tubes tested performance.

Just sold my second pair of Heresys on eBay, local pick up only, had the buyer leave positive feedback before the speakers left the house so no disputes could arise later.

No more Heresys but plenty of heretics lol.

I recently purchased a second pair of Infinity Modulus and planned on selling the AR58S but the Heresys were bringing more money and the AR's are actually the superior speaker.

But they do require a more robust amp, replacing the Heresys with the AR's as bedroom speakers also meant moving the monster Soundcraftsmen amp into the bedroom, the bedroom system is becoming a lot more than intended.

Its not a real big deal I just wanted to tell a lil story and also make sure my understanding of tube 'getters' was correct. The video of the 'techs' observing the tubes saying 'look at this 'halo effect" and they are shot tube because the script is hard to read and falsely claiming the 'getter' burn a sign of wear and was attributed to leaving the amp on for over a year or played extremely hard, claiming that is why there is silver stuff on the tube. Really I just wanted to give you all something to laugh about.

Agreed he had some remorse.
Should have just enjoyed it as you did.
He took it to a shop that was trying to sell work, and that most likely planted the seeds of remorse.
I know guys that buy used stuff, and do the same thing.
Over and over.
Take it to someone who tells them all that is wrong.
Instead of all that is good.
I tell them just buy new, and be happy.
They are to picky to buy used.
