Buying a vinyl and tape collection

I gave a friend $400 for 200 records last fall. Most were in VG+ condition. Some had minor water damage. It was pretty much all 70's and 80's rock. Lots were extremely common. However, I got a ton of Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Dio and Rush. Those made up for the common stuff easily. I kept about 150 of them and sold the rest to a friend for about 100.
 
If you look at records for sale on facebook market place, that would give you an idea of value. Then you just need to come up with a price for you to buy. Around here, common records sell for about $5 each, and up from there for LZ, Beatles, Stones, Black Sabbath, Heavy metal anything, Reggae, Blues, etc. I wouldn't pay more than $2 each but I am always upgrading. Cassettes would be $1 to $2 each. I think your $300 to $400 for the lot is good depending on just how much of the good stuff is in there.

Metal is tough to find. Lots of metal fanatics out there. Even more than the Reggae nuts.
 
It sounds like he wants a token jesture for his prized collection, I'd say starting around $300 wouldn't be offensive. It's good to hear about metal being sought after, I've got tons, there's an old thread on here from years ago where I scored a bunch at Goodwill, they looked mint, from a radio station, lots of "promo" copies. Punk is impossible to find, 80's rap is almost as difficult.

I asked our local used record shop what they were looking for a few years ago, he said Journey, Styx and some of the other late 70's melodic rock were hot, records I never considered being valuable because everyone had a copy back then and the kids all know the songs and now also want those records.

I noticed the same with Beatles vs Rolling Stones, I've found tons of Beatles Albums (and the owners think they are priceless), but only a fraction of the Stones Catalog.
 
I have a 631 and it has been one of the only cassette decks that the factory belt was still good on it when I got it. I did have to turn up the speed pot up one notch because it was running a pinch slow.

I am not much of a metal fan unless late 60's, early 70's, like Sabbath, I can still listen to them, an entire album and like it. I can't do that with later stuff like Maiden. So unless flipable I would rather find other stuff. Yeah, 80's punk isn't real easy to find. Rap either. I can't stand Rap, but wouldn't hesitate to purchase it for flips. Picked up something by Blackalicious the other day that should bring a couple bucks...

I have been known to get irritated with the lack of Stones finds from the 60's, early 70's. Really hard to find anything from the 60's by the Stones. Singles, or LP's. I found Let It Bleed, and Beggars banquet at the same time a couple months ago but that was a great haul lot.

It all comes back to what the OP is trying to do.

Oh yeah, metal goes like crazy. I bought about 1000 LPs about 5 years ago. I pulled about 140 LPs that were metal and listed them immediately. Within hours, I got contacted. The guy told me it wouldn't be long til I heard from another guy, and he gave me his name. The guy bought $480 worth of records on that visit, and didn't try negotiating for anything. If he liked my price, he bought it. Sure enough, the other guy contacted me shortly after, but didn't come because the first guy had been here. I had many more contacts and the heavy metal was the first to go. It took me another 6 months to go through the collection, clean them, so I was comparing apples to apples, and then I put the duplicates on my critical listening system with two turntables, and I kept the best. I ended up dealing with this first guy multiple times. He even gave me a couple of dual turntables that needed work, and about three Discwasher boxes full of cartridges he had collected over the years. I am still using these when I need a cartridge.

I've had pretty good luck finding stones at smaller towns not too far from here. You might give that a shot.

Anything RAP or Punk sells in the $40 and up range around here. You can sometimes negotiate lower prices if you buy other things. I got The Smiths Meat is Murder thrown in when I bought a couple of receivers from one place.
 
'Metal goes like crazy'.... I never would have thought that. If I had bunch of them I'd probably give them to the thrift without having a clue until reading here. Honestly, I always considered Metal as something like white rap but don't really have much experience with it.

I am flipping this stuff. I am not negotiating.

I haven't paid more than a dollar for a record in a long time........

That was the point of the thread. He isn't paying retail. $2-3 a piece.
 
But the OP has no intention of flipping. So his lens is different from yours. He is looking to get an instant record collection in one shot. Great idea! That is the way to do it.

There is a rabid metal fan base. And a hell of a lot of them are in their 50's, and 60's. Even older. It's amazing to me. Especially some of the bands. It's later hard stuff. And bands like Iron Maiden and AC/DC have rabid fan bases.

I sold a guy in his early 60's a Carver Amp in 2011 and this character was a Rabid AC/DC fan.

Lots of them out there.

I find it amusing. It's like have you ever heard anything else? To each his own. I just can't listen to the stuff. Drives me nuts. But so does Bruckner. :dunno:
 
Are the titles are ones that you would of otherwise sought out, or ones that you really don't care for?
I think that's the only thing you need to know. If you would of hunted them down in the wild anyway, be generous. If they are so-so titles, either pass or give him 2 bucks apiece.
I bought way too many records over the years that I should of left on the rack. Having music you don't listen to makes little sense.

The point being he is buying a collection. Nobody whether a flipper or not is buying a collection and paying retail.
