thanks for everybody,

In fact, I did make an audition when C220 was just arrived in a shop I am familiar with and found that C220 is inferior to C2200 in every aspects. Maybe C220 was not fully running in at that time. I am puzzled whether C220 is a good preamp or not. But for C2200, it seem out of proportionate in my system, which would be most expenive component. I live in Hong Kong. My 275 IV is about HK$ 32,000 and Cary Player HK$ 15,000, 1sc with foundation II stand about HK$ 20,000. If for C2200, it costs about HK$ 35,000 equivlant to US $ 5,000. The combination is not so balanced. Any comments if I invest most in my pre-amp.

If you are not against a SS pre amp - try to have a listen to the C-46. I had my heart on getting the c2200 for my MAC2102's however I preferred the C-46. The main differences to me was the c46 had better bass drive and was better intergrated top to bottom. The 8 band equaliser is great as well, even if I don't use it a lot.

Hej,

I recently purchased an almost new C220 (barely broken in) and have your same speakers. I am extremely happy with the C220 so far.
The C2200 is better for sure, but that would be expected with the price difference.

Posts like " A is better than the B, you should get A that instead..." don't make much sense to me when A costs twice or more. A component should be compared to products in its own price range.

If it is transparency you seek, you can always tuberoll or try different cables. but do give the c220 a chance, it might be better that you think. with what you save you can get all the tubes you wish and some...

hi everybody,

I pick up the c220 by myself tonight, instead of waiting for delivery for 1 week.

My initial impression for C220 of which is incorporated into my present system is great, great, great.

it is much better than when I heard the same in the audio shop when it first arrived there. I don't know the reason. After playing few hours, its sound become better and better. Although it is quite expensive to me, I have no regret at all and think it may be one of most wise decision this year.

I am really eager to know when this baby fully run in, what sound it would play out.

I plan to switch it on for 1 week for speeding the run-in process. is it the proper way to do so??

I don't know if you need to play the C220 for a full week, but I don't think it would hurt anything. When I got my C2200 I let it play a CD on repeat for 24 hours and I did not hear much difference after that first day, actually I don't think I heard much difference after the first hour of playing. I find most McIntosh equipment sounds great right out of the box and changes very little after the first few hours.

Enjoy your new C220. Let me know if you hear any difference in the first few days of playing it.

Congrats on the purchase Idabao. I have both coming in soon and not sure which direction I will go. Not sure if I need all of the features on the 2200 but I am leaning towards it although for the money, the 220 is a REAL contender.

You made a great choice regardless and I know you will enjoy the music :music:

My biggest issue is I keep acquiring more and more and then have to turn around and sell something as you can only have so many systems to listen to at one time.:scratch2:

For tubes rolling, I learned the experiences of other users of mc gears that the factory tubes might be best fit for its machine. In fact, I have similar experiences. I have a quard of GEC KT-88 which I had placed in my 275 IV. With surprises, the original Russian KT-88 is better than GEC KT-88, including high and bass more extended than very expensive GEC KT-88.

In fact, in Hong Kong, there are too many fake NOS and eventually, I found improvement by changing of the cable is much significatly and more practically, instead of taking the risk for purchasing the fake NoS tubes.

I just purchased a C-46 myself!! Still breaking it in, but so far for my system it is amazing. I thought about adding a Mc-252 later (I believe this pre can handle 3 amps) I do wish it had a LOUD comp as I miss the bass boast I had on the MA-6200.

idabao,

Based on my experience on C2200, I don't think you will hear any big difference even after 100+ hours, also I'm not bothered to have tubes rolled as I have read many reviews that the original tubes are in fact as good if not better than the expensive ones, and I believe Mc's engineers know what they are doing anyway, I would say it is good fun if you can have tube rolling though.

As the power conditioner thing, I know you may have already received a lot different opinions from the local AV forums, but I would say get the RGPC 400Pro, it may be a little more expensive in HK than US, but you won't get any decent product cheap say a Shunyata Hydra8, selling at almost two 400Pro here, my mate is using it, but honestly speaking I still prefer the 400Pro, give the 400Pro a try and I'm sure you will get the beneifit out of it especially if you are going to use it with your video equipments.

Prior to the MC2000, I did have a pair of MC275 Mk III and did the same thing. Got tubes that are "supposedly" better than the original McIntosh's and know what, they do not perform up to mark at all when compared to the tubes that comes with the MC275.

Long story short, in the end, I only want McIntosh marked tubes from McIntosh. Yes, they do costs more BUT somewhere along the line, there must be some matching and selection criteria that separates them from the "outsiders". I could be wrong, but from then on, I am a believer of this own theory. For my MC2000, I will only have a spare set of tubes for the MC2000 from McIntosh.

You can choose to differ and I respect that. Just to share my experience.

Cheers.

Indeed, I have doubted that the reason of Nos Tubes not better than the factory set is that there is no bias setting in 275 IV. 275 IV could not be adjusted to give the most balanced inputs for the power tubes. However MC 2000 shall have the bias setting. Is your experence that even with bias adjustment, the factory tubes are still better than famous Nos??

Hi, I have never "roll tubes" as yet as my MC2000 is barely 50 hours old. However, the tubes are ORIGINALS from the factory and are position marked. So, they should be biased correctly before leaving factory.

As for the MC275, being "auto bias", factory originals would be an even better reason to do so as we dont know for sure "outside" tubes are paired in quads or not and even if it is, would it be to MC275 specs. We think it is, but really, dont know for sure. However, I do believe that QUAD matched tubes from McIntosh are biased accordingly to each MC275. That is the difference I think.

Cheers.

heard the c220

Hi, I am a new user of MC275IV and have recently purchased a Proac 1sc which is now placed in my study room for running-in. I am puzzled to choose C220 or C2200 as the pre-amp for my new 1sc. My cd-player is Cary CP-1. Please suggest.....?? thanks a lot.

I think Ron-C made some comments on this somewhere on this board regarding these two.

I have gotten to hear a C220 with two mc275 mkiv's, along with a B&W 803D and a Mcintosh Cd player at the dealer and It was really good to my ears.

We listened to the Kill Bill V1 soundtrack, Track 9, put the volume up to 65, those guitars cut and the dynamics were from silence to a really live in the room kind of feel. I was air guitaring the whole song.

What was really cool on Nora Jones one of her albums she and her piano really sounded like they were in the room. My girlfriend went as far to almost clap.

I claim not to be a really crazy hi-fi person but to me this sounded just the way I wanted it to. I also came from a ma5100 from the last 7-10 years so this is quite a jump for me. The 5100 will go to the bedroom though :-)

I understand those blue beacons of coolness, beckon and Im sure they probably sound better, but for the 1000.00 I need to take care of some other stereo related things.

No reason you shouldn't listen to both though :-)

After three days' run-in, i found nothing different when I played it after first two hours. Maybe Mc's product is really good while out of box.

Keep checking. The other night after I had the set up running for 4 hours on background audio then a movie for 2 hours, I put in a good CD and 'fxxk me!' it was incredible!

There was definitely an improvement and I'm sure it wasn't just the wine :smoke:

Same experience with my C46

Changed significantly during the first 6-8 hours but not much at all afterwards; have over 200 hours on it by now.

The c220 to me is awesome. Having a lot of fun with it. How come no one mentioned how COOL THAT REMOTE IS!!!! Almost makes up for not having the blue dials...almost :-)

The C220 remote is cool? Can you post a pic? I have to say the MDA1000 remote I saw the other day is almost embarassing to look at. A $30 CD player usually has a better remote than that
