David T, I built those (stair steps) because when no ones around I get my little Beatles dolls out and set up Ringo on the top and Paul in front and play the white album. Seriously they are there mainly to break up resonance modes. The length and flare rate determine largely what comes out of the horn. The Japanese prefer little walls the right height to make the curve then filled with gravel or sand. Hey I LOVE the Henry Moore influence, fascinating and very well exucuted. I'm a huge fan. I have done the circuit of high power and "flea-powered" amps to finally settle with a SV83M, and I can tell you that a flea power, couple of watts SET partnered with the right speakers delivers the goods, be it classical or jazz or rock. and delivers it with great authority and a pretty life-like presentation. yes, it is true that such a system does need some assistance from a bass [horn loaded being my preference] speaker to provide that oomph that many find missing in horn-loaded full-range single driver setups.

What it finally comes down to is personal preference. what works for me and makes music and speech sound as natural as possible is the system I am using now.

But when we try to re-create recorded music via a [superb] home audio system and expect it to sound like the "real thing" it will fall flat on its face. yeah, one can come pretty close but never that close! and so the quest goes on, to audio nirvana
