Calling All Yamahas. Time to Post Your Pics

My latest Yamaha purchase...

I won an eBay auction for this TC-520 cassette deck last weekend. It was a local pick-up, so no shipping charges incurred. I just hooked it up in my younger daughter's stack, with her CA-810, CT-810 combo, and Yamaha CD changer. She's using my old Pioneer PL-400 TT, and a pair of ADS L-400 speakers. Otherwise, it's an all Yamaha system.:music: It sounds pretty good, and is a nice visual match for the amp and tuner. I finally got my TC-1000 repaired recently, which is the TOTL cassette deck for this same vinatage as the TC-520.

The MX-2000 is a MOSFET design and at first glance is an 'all out' implementation (copper clad & shielded chassis, heavy duty binding posts, large meters, 22000uf caps, extra large heat sinks, rosewood side panels, machined-not stamped-titanium case, 61 lbs, etc) but on closer look the B-2 (in my opinion) is superior.
Hmmm......didn't really pay any attention to this earlier, but am wondering about it being a MOSFET amp. No other Yamaha amps that I am aware are MOSFET in the power stages. Always understood the MX-2000 (and all XX-2XXX series) to be the same as the XX-1XXX series with upgraded chassis and components rather than a totally different design.

Thanks. That's great. Wasn't really interested in one, thinking it would be another BJT. Remember fondly the sound of the Sony MOSFET amps (TA-F808ES and TA-N90ES). Wonder how this might compare to them.

How about the MX-10000? Is it also MOSFET?

BTW - Where are located?

rhioki - Did you know this?

MX-2000 is a Jr MX10000

The 10,0000 is also a MOSFET and has twice the power and twice the PS capacitance. I had a couple of MX1000's which are not MOSFET's and got rid of them in favor of the B2. Never heard the 10,000 or B1 but my order of preference in Yamaha amps are 1 - the B2, 2- the MX2000, 3- the M2 & P2200 (tied), MX1000. I also had a couple of M4's for which I built 300,000 MFD outboard capactor banks for - they were righ up the with the M2 & P2200 and maybe higher but as a stock amp they wouldn't make it. Somewhere someone said that your signal only goes to the input stage then after that your listening to your power supply modulated by the the signal. All the amp's I've liked have healthy power supplys.

My experience has also been that the MX-1000 is too 'bright' for the NS-1000/1000M. Horses for courses, I would say.

Reason for post edit.

Blah Blah Blah;)
Probably should explain this post. I thought that my MX1000u was a MOSFET amp too. After my original post, I slid it out of my rack and while doing so, bumped my custom painted JBL 2397 Smithhorns, causing a nasty scratch :tears: . It is an NPN-PNP output array, so I stand corrected wrt my original post. Boy I was so pissed at myself, I came back to edit the post and posted the above. No offence to the previous post or it's author. My personal opinion of all the big vintage Yamaha's are very high. IMHO, they are generally underrated and the differeces in S.Q. is akin to splitting hairs. I agree with you B-2, horses for courses :thmbsp:

The rest of the 2000 series circuit topology is exactly like the 1000 series

I also have a CX-2000, CDX-2020, & TX-1000 and the service manuals for all of them. The service manual for the CX-2000 states it is for the “CX-1000,CX-2000", the CDX manual is for the 1020, 2020, & CD-5050 (sold overseas) and the TX manual is for both the 1000 & 2000. The MX-2000 and MX-1000 manuals are separate and completely different as each amp is a different animal. The differences between the other 1000 & 2000 series components are copper clad shielded chassis and exterior cabinet additionally there are a few selected component upgrades but circuit topology is exactly the same.

Well, and...

Yes, the MX-1000 does not share much with the MX-2000 other than the name.
And exceptional sound quality and gobs of clean headroom, the ability to output 1000 watts into 1 ohm, 127 S/N ratio, bullet-proof construction, dual mono design etc-etc :D

With proper source, Yamaha MX-1000 is a dream match with NS-1000, its detailed, transparent, everything one could ask for in a Yamaha, of course, the MX-2000 is a different beast alltogether. Sonic character is more refined no doubt but subtle and not drastic when compared to MX-1000, thats Yamaha's commitment, its lower brands sound as good as its TOTL.

G'Day to you Theophille, nice to see you all there again, had a brush with death, feels good to be alive.

Does anyone have a nudie of the MX-1000 that they can post? I've forgotten what the layout looks like. Thanks.

B2 vs MX2000

I couple of posts ago there has been some discussion of the best sounding Yamaha amp. I’m not going to go there and proclaim something ‘best’, however, I made some changes in my system recently and have a perspective to share. First the system; tri-amped - cdx2020, cx2000, modified Marchand XM9 4th order xover (263hz, 63hz), B2’s and MX2000 feeding Altec 311-90’x/902A, Altec 416A’s in 835 cabinet, and 2 JBL SUB1500’s in an Altec 820 cabinet. (other components –PX3, KX1200, TX100, RT-707, 5kva balanced power + .5kva balanced power for cdx). I just added FRED’s to my three B2’s and wanted to listen to them awhile. Normally I use 2 B2’s for the highs and lower mids and the MX2000 for the JBL sub1500 subwoofers, but in order to listen to all three B2’s, I hooked the 3rd one up as the subwoofer amp. As the sub1500’s are not terribly efficient and the B2 only puts out 140 RMS WPC versus the MX2000’s 180 RMS WPC, I thought the B2 would be a little wimpy. To my surprise it was actually very powerful and much more musical than the MX2000, instead of a ‘thump’ I got a ‘thumm’ --- a warmer, rounder, fuller, controlled, musical bass that was reminiscent of the JBL 2226J’s I had used previously as subwoofers (I know they aren’t subs but tuned properly they produce deep musical bass although they don’t go really as low as the sub1500’s). In fact purchased the sub1500’s on hype, specs and reviews without ever listening to them. Once I did I was disappointed and it was too late as the 2226’s were sold. Now I’m quite happy with the sub1500’s and in fact I believe they are as musical as the 2226’s and certainly go lower. (the 2226’s don’t make Captain Kirk’s Enterprise sound as good as the sub1500’s either). Why do the sub1500’s now sound better? I keep getting back to what I’ve stated in earlier posts…power supply. The MX2000 has only 1 power transformer and 20,000mfd/channel of storage while the B2 has 2 power supply transformers and 36,000mfd/channel of storage. Of course the B2’s have the FRED’s and the PS caps are bypassed with polycarbonate caps and the MX2000 is untouched stock Yamaha. I think the power supply is the biggest difference in determining ‘warm’ sounding amps has been the power supply …. Generally the bigger the better it sounded. Another difference is the damping factor … the MX2000 has a damping factor of 1000 while the B2 has a measly 70. I’m not sure how this comes into play perhaps someone has an idea. Meanwhile the B2 is going to be the subwoofer amp.
