Calling All Yamahas. Time to Post Your Pics

Congratulations, the Yamaha man just added another fantastic piece of Yamaha history to his collection. This amp truly kicks butt in terms of performance and sound.

totem this is a digital amp, not like the tredisional transistor amps. The application is done by a chip! It has an effectiveness of properly about 93%, this means that 93% of the electric power put into the amp is converted into an audio signal, this is why the weight is so low - it does not need as much cooling.

read more about the amp here: http://stereophile.com/solidpoweramp...aha/index.html

And Mark: now you almost have them all down, cool :thmbsp:

Thanks guys, I've been looking for an MX-D1 for awhile.

Mark Tell us more about this amp. Is this a temporary in house demo, or an addition to your line up. I have a phobia regarding lower weight, in this case 23lb
high output amps. But I am seeing an audio therapist.

This is a permanent addition.

The sound is reminicent of the MX-1 & B-1, with greater dynamics. I've been running it with the Energy Veritas 2.4i's and they are a limiting factor. Running the Infinities with the MX-D1 should let the amp stretch it's legs.

I understand the phobia about the low weight: an effective therapy is to hook up an MX-D1.

So you managed to snag one? Alright! Digital amps are surprisingly good and I bet this high-end offering is much, much better. Definitely an understated, but lethal looking amp, kind of stealth like.

Yeah, I finally got one JP! After listening to it, I'm a believer in Yamaha's version of the class D amp.

Very nice Mark!! Wish I had not missed out on that. There are four (4) more in an eBay store, but have a BIN price of $2,250, which is $6-900 more than the others sold for. Did yours come with a full Yamaha warranty?

It's a "C" stock unit, and has no warranty. If the amp hadn't been in perfect working & cosmetic condition I would have returned it to the seller. For additional protection in case of a problem I paid with a credit card.

Wow, another nice addition Mark!

Looks indeed very understated/stealthy, a bit like a 1U server (but obviously a lot fancier).

Never heard a class D amp, glad to hear it sounds great!

Do you have all that Yamaha gear in active duty or do you switch them around?

Mark you and I have spoke about these MX-D1s before. Glad to see you got one. I was going to bid on one of those MX-D1s that ran a cross Ebay here recently but when they went over my limit, I sat them out. I have had the priveledge of having one of these for awhile and as I have said before, to me it was the best sounding amp I personally had ever heard. I will continue to wait for another one. Congrats again and I beleive your collection has come full circle now . You now have almost every GREAT statement piece Yamaha made- INCREDIBLE!

Now you need to chase down the matching preamp, the YPC-1. It is a passive unit, which should make it very quiet. Here is the link to Yamaha's brochure on the MX-D1 and YPC-1. It has some nice nudies. Good to see that they stuck to the copper-clad chassis like they did with some of their earlier TOTL amps (MX-10000, MX-2000, B-2x, A-2000, etc.)http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Documents/YEC/Separate_Components/Brochure/MXD1_literature.pdf

Odd that the YPC-1 is only single-ended. Wonder what their thinking on that is? Even the one-man operation of Placette has a balanced passive unit.

BTW Mark B - how was "Spy Catcher"?

My main system is pretty stable with the Centennial gear running the Infinity Q2's. Everything else gets played occasionally in my demo system, which has taken over my dining room. :D

I'm going to convert a guest bedroom to an audio room, and set up the demo system there.

Your opinion had a lot to do with my decision to get the amp. I'm happy to say that you were right.

Mark I took a look at the link to the Yamaha site and noticed that on the back
panel the speaker outputs are marked min 4 ohm,s. In the specs they have a Dynamic rating into a 2 ohm load. Was there any info supplied with your amp that further covers this point? The reason I ask, is I have a pair of Infinity
RS-2.5,s that go lower than 2 ohms with the Watkins woofer.

The OM gives the following info:

Active Power Control System
By continuously moitoring the amplifiers output current and controlling the maximum continuous output power and instantanious dynamic power, the MX-D1 always delivers maximum performance with any load impedence between 2 to 8 ohms.

and

Protection system
The protection system, which guarantees safe operation, includes a super-fast current detection circuit that can measure the current of a sigle pulse. It also includes safe operating sequential logic, DC detection, and over-current protection.

Sounds like a 2 ohm load would be fine.

If you ever want to test that, I've a pair of ribbons that would work well for it. They've been measured at ~82dB/W/M efficient (I think it's a fair bit more than that, though) and stay around 2-2.4 ohms for their entire range, but dip down to 1.2 ohms with the zobel bypassed. Running them with that amp at high volume should be a good test for 2 ohm load capability if you ever really want to know.

If you want to bring them down we can check it out.

If I ever feel like packing up these 6'x3.3' frankenribbons and haul them a state away, I definitely will. It would be real interesting to hear what they can do with TOTL electronics backing them. Enough so to possibly justifying my hauling them down there.

Well, the MX-D1 is a tough act to follow but I'm sitting here very much enjoying listening to my newest Yamaha, the venerable Yamaha B-2 power amp. This is a beast at 26Kg and I won't be moving it around too much if I can help it. Right now I've got it mated with my Sansui CA-2000 pre driving my Braun L810's. I'll leave it this way for a day or two then switch it over to the CX-1000/NS-1000M combo as I want to compare it to the M-85 in that system.

What a wonderful sounding amp. I have to wonder why though Yamaha chose flat black for the finish.. why oh why couldn't they all have been silver (titanium!) Ah well, she's my black beauty and I'm a pretty happy guy this afternoon :guitar:
We need a dancing banana with a guitar

Ah, one of the things on my 'to own one day' list (it's very long).

They were available in silver, but those you hardly ever see (hardly see the black ones, at least in Europe).

Very nice broonsbane, spreading the vfet vibe :D

I'm fully in agreement Broonsbane.
Congratulations.:thmbsp:
The B-2 is an ugly duckling which turns into the most beautiful swan when listened to.
It's a shame it wasn't style designed by the individual/team who designed the MX-2000.:tears:
All that aside, the sound more than makes-up for the dreary exterior.Very adequate compensation.:D

Time for someone with too much time on his hands, and a spare B-2 and MX-2000 to mate the gorgeous frontplate of the MX-2000 to the B-2! :D

That's got to be Mark B or t-r-m. But it will be tricky with the MX-2000 being ~2" wider and lower than the B-2. I'll loan you a hammer. :D
