Are they the ones that look like black mushrooms? I read that they were designed in the U.K. and apparently they make good rears in a HT setup.

no , they are not the mushroom speakers , they are a three way speaker with what looks to be a small horn tweeter .

I just noticed, you asked about cannon speakers, the ones I posted are canon, they usually make cameras but I read that they put a lot of effort and money into speaker design, albeit briefly.

thanks bolly ! i might go pick them up , they need new surrounds but for 20 bucks it should be a good project .

I think that there is a distinction between Canon (which I think made those those mushroom speakers in England) and Cannon which at least for a time was a ESS subsidiary, many of whose model numbers started with TLS, which I believe stood for Translinear Systems, another ESS name, rather than anything to do with transmission line speakers (alas!).
I have a pair of cabinets with one original tweeter and two dual voice coil radioshack subwoofers that were given to me at the dump. The cabinets are in good shape, and they look strangely like they are exactly twice the size of the Small Advent, of which I have two pair. This may be a sign that I need to make an internally stacked pair...

I had a pair very similar; I believe it was Cannon 1030, but this was indeed 30 years ago. They had a 2 x 5 inch piezo tweeter, a 5 inch cone mid with a screen on it, a 10 inch paper cone woofer and a rear mounted 10 inch flat passive radiator. I remember mid and tweeter level controls on the front panel. They were definitely in the ESS style (cabinet shape and rear flat passive radiator). High efficiency and fairly good bass- west coast sound which I enjoyed for rock.
