Capacitor suggestions for polyester caps...Noob Q of the day.

I know that they last forever as long as they are physically OK, but
does anyone know what the best modern equivalents are
that could replace old MKT or the old green polyester film caps?

I am not certain what the newer/better versions might be.

The old MKTs look like this...

Here is an axial version that looks exactly correct to what I have.

The old greenies look like this...

Thanks!!

I think we have to thank to Leestereo, he use them:thumbsup:... so if Is good enough for him...

Still I wonder if the "ECW Series Metallized Plastic Film Capacitors" suggested will stand in for both types that I show above.

Would WIMA type be a better choice to replace the MKT?

A bit more information here

Reveals that the dielectric is Polyester (Polyethylene terephthalate) or PET. - this and the precise construction are two key important things about film capacitors.

This dielectric description is mentioned in Mouser listings - (others too I expect) - so you should be able to find equivalents quite easily. Note in the doc about some sizes being 'stacked film' and others being 'wound film' - can be important.

Panasonic ECW are Polypropylene http://www.mouser.co.uk/new/panasonic/panasonicecw/
Panasonic ECQ are Polyester http://www.mouser.co.uk/new/panasonic/panasonicecqefcaps/

Yes sure . I would choose the MKP (Metallized Polypropylene Capacitors) with the same values , of course :-)

Awesome!

The MKT is the real match that I'm worried about.
It's replacement's position in circuit must be a high quality (very musical?) cap. That is why I'm considering WIMA in that position. Provided it fits well too. That spot is a little tight.

So any advantage going the WIMA route, or will there be no difference for the cost.

It depends which range of WIMA you are considering - some ranges are too physically large to be considered in many cases. In the case of WIMA MKP - a 1µF 100V has a 22.5mm lead spacing - you need to think about this.

Lead spacing is 7.62 mm in the original.
Size of body is 11.65 mm X 3 mm.

Radial leads are on the original but axial is of course no problem.

What the heck does that mean and how does one determine that from a cap datasheet? Common on, we all know what properties of a cap make it better than the other and it isn't musical. We are talking audio frequencies here now.
It has nothing to do with what it looks like.

I'd have to look at that design (pretty old, early 70's?, being a F-1209) to see what caps you changed and possible reasons why you changed some films to PP and polystyrene and not them all. Go figure.

Its was kind of experiment... I was bored waiting for parts, no other reason... funny thing, It sounds better with orange drops and the styrene, why? :dunno: .... and yup, you are definitly right, filter block Au-999

Noob is in the title.

People who still sell MKT on eBay or new old stock websites often harp on its audio qualities / musicality so...standard sales pitch is what IT means.

Anyway...size is a bit of an issue on this one. The position is surrounded by components and there are component cards above it limiting height.

That MKT (it's replacement) will go here.

What about the c0g type? Those should serve ok too I'm guessing.

Best to keep it as a film if that was what was originally in there.

What value and voltage is required there?

Now talking seriously, all depends of what is the capacitor function on each circuit.
I bet if you are more specific about your need someone will chime in and give you the best alternative and why.
