Cart storage?

I had the same question, but was willing to buy something if needed. I found this:

But it's a little pricey for a plastic case and some reviews say you can't really store 4 in some cases because the front edge of the carts/headshells may hit each other.
Also, if you want to store a cart mounted on a Dual headshell carrier/sled, then this box wouldn't work.

I'm not sure what's up with the first photo on Amazon's page for the Shure MCC case. It shows four headshells lined up in a row, immediately next to each other. That's not how the MCC case is designed. The second photo matches the MCC cases that I've seen. Is there actually a version of the case that has the cartridges lined up like in the first photo?
I have one of those snap-together plastic cases with foam in it. I made some cutouts in the foam to hold the carts, and they just sit in there. Perhaps not the most elegant, but its functional. I should probably rework the somewhat nicer plastic case that came with my Stanton 680.v3. Its a heavier plastic with a better latch, and its of a suitable size that it would hold several carts if I made a similar foam block with cutouts.

I like the pillbox idea, if only because it's kind of humorous! Is that large enough to hold the headshells as well?
The Shure case is very well made, rugged, and offers exceptional protection, but is a bit pricey for the non-DJs amongst us. (I dunno about you guys, but I really don't need something that is waterproof and able to float.) I hadn't thought of using one of those plastic compartment cases shown above - I'll have to see what the dollar store has (after the blizzard is over).

I used a acrylic softball display case from the container store ($5) and a piece of wood, to store cartridges mounted on headshells. Drilled holes (with notches) in the wood, and double face taped it to the case. The case comes apart. It keeps the dust off the cartridges, while displaying them, and keeping them handy right next to the tables. The piece of wood you see is only temporary - I'm going to cut/drill a new one that fits better and the holes will be exactly lined up.
Also doubles as a headphone holder. :thmbsp:

Very Clever with the headphone idea!
I use the SHURE holder and it is not ideal, as the headshells "hit each other" when you shut the case if they're particularly long headshells.

the build quality is awful, the slots are too tight for the headshells, and the headshell mounts are very crappily fixed to the bottom of the case, and are about to come apart!

Now I'm having second thoughts.
I like the Plano idea, but I'm a little concerned about carts without stylus protectors being stored with that.

Yeah, true, Plano seems economical, but potentially risky. If you store the cart on a headshell and put it upside down (stylus up), it may be okay unless you drop/shake the box. The Shure one (DIY aside) seems the best if the headshells don't touch each other.
The problem is that Shure one is questionable. Something about it doesn't feel right to me. Ive been looking around for something that could lend to a simple DIY situation or something for several months now and have not found anything. I want to store my extra carts on a headshell ultimately. I've looked all through the Container Store and found nothing that would fit that idea. The baseball box is an interesting idea, but I don't have a garage or wood working tools to do all that. Plus, I don't want to display my carts. Why would I?
What would be great is something that can hold perhaps two carts attached to the headshell safely by putting the headshell on a post or something like done in the baseball box example.

I don't remember where I saw it, but one of the best ideas I've seen is someone that had a dozen or so headshell/cartridges installed in Technics overhang gauges. The overhand gauges were mounted on a board a couple/few inches apart (I don't know it they were glued to the board or screwed in somehow or what). I believe they had some type of clear cover over the whole thing.
The overhang gauges hold the headshell/cartridges securely, and it displayed them very nicely - all lined up in a row.

Has anyone else ever thought of using some of the Technics overhang gauges specifically for this purpose? $3.75 a piece at KAB, and they could be glued pointing up or level onto a multitude of things. Maybe inside a plastic model display case. Heck, they could even be attached to a cut piece of 2x4.
