Cart storage?

Yes I had at some point planned to buy maybe 4 of these, and install them into a model car case (acrylic clear) and just show them on display.

I eventually took a chance on the odyssey (linked in a few posts above) and realized it was a mistake. I may look at this option some time down the line, but I most likely will find a way to hack the odyssey to work for me


Also another thing to note about the shure. I plugged in some Ortofon SH4 headshells and the lid on the shure doesn't close AT ALL. Disappointing!
 
I've been looking for cart storage for a long time, it simply doesn't exist unless you make it yourself. Myself not having the skills or tools, am out of options. No place to safely store carts means no purchasing extra carts and no upgrading unless I want to throw out the old carts which would be foolish if they are still good and are the type that the stylus can be replaced. (Some of those type aren't worth it though and can be thrown out).
I'm thinking about this because I'm getting around to having to through out a $400 cart. It's not the type that you can replace the stylus on and if it's no good I won't feel bad about tossing it. If it is still good, that will be a problem because I would want to keep it as a spare.
This has to be the toughest question in the hobby.
I'm still thinking on it. I was going to get one of those Technics mounting gauges anyway for when I get a new cart sometime. I figure it will help so I don't have to try to hold on to the headshell, cart, screws, nuts, tools, digital caliper, (juggling pins, eggs, saw blades and a bowlingball) trying to mount a cart on a headshell. That said, maybe there is something to the idea of getting a few of them. Then perhaps one can pick up a Pelican case or Vaultz case or something and put maybe some of that pluck N pull foam rubber and customize the case to hold the mounts nice and neat. Finding a case with little pegs the headshells could fit over would be nicer and require less bulk, but unfortunately non-existent.

The Shure case is very well made, rugged, and offers exceptional protection, but is a bit pricey for the non-DJs amongst us. (I dunno about you guys, but I really don't need something that is waterproof and able to float.) I hadn't thought of using one of those plastic compartment cases shown above - I'll have to see what the dollar store has (after the blizzard is over).

and around 8-10 of the
Technics overhang gauges, a couple dabs of epoxy to the gauge bottom, and you've got a pretty classy display case for your headshells and carts. I used an old ink pen display case, and used a keyhole saw to put a second slot in the gauge for headshells with double prongs. Works great!

I've wanted one of these and searched for one for over 6 years now... and I finally found one!

But...I just changed my mind. I don't want it for the asking price - even though the asking price is well within reason because of it's 'rarity' and collectability.

Is it rare? VERY. (The folks that have one never sell it.)
Is it hard to find? Extremely!!!! 6 years of searching 5 different countries. Seems like most of them are in Japan.
Is it cool? VERY COOL.
Does it look cool? Yeah, it looks really pretty cool! It would go so well with the stereo. It's an eye catcher!!

It's just 4 pieces of plastic, but it's pretty cool plastic! Very display 'arty'.


But for some reason I just changed my mind as soon as I saw it for sale. And I only have 3 extra headshells/carts so it would be perfect. I will probably regret not getting it!! :scratch2: I'm regretting it already.


Gotta think about it. But it will be gone by tonight probably. Maybe it's gone already. But I just checked 10 minutes ago...and it's still there.

The best diy idea I've seen is the plastic spindle case that CD/DVDs come in with a wooden insert glued to the bottom inside (cut off the pole the discs stack on) with holes drilled for the headshells. Like the cheese board one. Got to be the best bang for the buck.

Pill cases....

Funny.... I used to use one of those to store my lights (CR-2025 battery with a led taped on) for Friday night disc golf. You had to keep the batteries separated or they would short out. Anyway, I found that these pill cases never came out of the mold properly. The hinges are just thin plastic, some thinner than others. One of two of the tops would break off after only a few times opening and closing. No they are not big enough to hold the headshell, but I guess if you didn't go into it often the lid problem would not be a big deal. Heck they cost $1 at a Dollar Tree.

Personally I like the unit posted by Balifly. Not pay $250 for one. I'll be on the lookout for a case like that where I could make my own drilled out wood base. An Aker (Similost??) used a round glass domed wooden base cheese server with the proper holes drilled. It looked neat.
 
Another modest idea...

I found this velvet ring storage tray. You have to work the cartridge in a bit, but it seems to hold them pretty snug. Cheap too :yes:

I went ahead and bought the Shure MCC DJ case:

The version that shipped to me was the one where you have 2 on each side (base and cover), not 4 in a row.

With the standard Technics headshells and some Shure carts installed, they fit fine and securely and don't hit each other or present any other challenges to prevent shorting all 4 headshells well/securely.

So happy with it so far. . .
 
Finally got around to finishing this little project. Gauges are epoxied to the velvet-like material insert which is mounted on a sheet of hard plastic and has a tab for ease of removal from the case. I'll probably end up wood-staining the case.

Also, if you want to store a cart mounted on a Dual headshell carrier/sled, then this box wouldn't work.

:scratch2:This looks very interesting. It's much cheaper and a little less refined than the Audio Technica. I currently have 4 cartridges sitting on my bookshelf. I might get one of these.
 
Get creative and make your own is always my response.

The technics overhang gauges are an easy bit to add to a box or stand. Ive seen people glue them to their plinth.

I made and use two of these. They face opposite directions and are placed on either side of the TT. You need to find a BF load of dead uni-arm TT's though.
