Carver C-4000 Preamp

I wonder, Seattle, if it would even be worth fixing? It seems the entire unit was built cheap using cheap parts so he (Bob) could compete with "The Big Boys". The unit LOOKS impressive, but it's what's on the inside that counts. And even if I "beef up" the internals, when people who are in the know walk in and see this thing in my system, they're going to question my taste in audio. I'm NOT trying to put down Carver/PL or anyone who is a fan, but I mean, it is what it is.
First off Carvers were the big boys. The first poster made a good point, about not being informed and then trying to make points regarding something that is simply untrue only makes your points seem less valid. Infinity, Carver, Phase Linear, Sunfire, they were all companies considered as Audiophile high-end gear, with many units sold worldwide. They produced a huge amount of really successful and acclaimed products for many decades, until they were sold to Harmon Kardon.

As described that model Preamp had a lot of features on many different boards so a lot of caps. It isn't that they were cheap, well actually most caps used in preamps like this are inexpensive, but this preamp was feature packed. I don't want to come off as a Carver priest, but many companies have some items that are not known to be the best of their line, and that Carver 4000 is basically the same model as the earlier Phase Linear 4000 just a different name and different color face plate, it was very popular for a long time, liked by many and it wasn't cheap.

Not sure your goal but if you don't like it, get rid of it, plenty of people willing to take it off your hands. Many people like Bryson, many don't, simply why there are many different companies out there to fit individual taste.
