I can tell you what my experience has been and hopefully it will help you...
I found a pair for $75 (yep, only $75) in a thrift store. When I removed the grills at home I watched as a pile of foam surround landed in a heap at my feet. All of the woofer surrounds were shot. It turns out that you can't refoam them but will need to buy replacement woofers, about $300 on sale.
As it turns out, one of the ribbon tweeters measured an open circuit and it currently on it's way to Florida for repair. $100 to ship and insure, $420 for the repair and return shipping. Add about another $100 for replacement grill cloth, wiring and refinishing materials (mine is the oak model).
By the time it's all refurbished I'm going to be into them just tickling the underside of $1000. I'm anticipating them sounding so nice as to change it from a price paid into an investment in beautiful sound. From what I've been able to find, I can see them being worth the $1000 I've got into them - $1200 on the high end.
I expect I'll enjoy them for a while and put them up for sale and move on to the next project.
