Looks pretty nice. The link in the ad says he restores vintage stuff. I wonder why he hasn't fixed the display. Are some of the parts unobtainium?

Great reciever and an easy fix.

There are some solder joints that are prone to get hot that cause this problem.

A nice Carver MXR-130 showed up on the Seattle list tonight for $125. I've seen these Carver receivers come available at $50 or less from people clearing out the garage, but I think $125 is a decent price. Less than a buck per WPC.

That's what I paid for mine IIRC. It's an OK unit, nothing to write home about. It came out after Bob left, which is basically when quality went out the window. No offense to whoever is selling it.
If I had to say one positive thing about it.....it would be, ...it looks nice.

I disagree - every Carver receiver I've had has been more than capable, a very nice sounding beefy amp, and a great value at that price, equivalent SS receivers seem to go for hundreds of dollars more. It could be that your unit has a bad capacitor or otherwise needs servicing..?

Bob left the old Carver Corp. in 1994 to form the Sunfire Corp. "The Receiver" (MXR-130/MXR-150) was produced between 1986-88.

I've owned the MXR-130. It's a good sounding receiver, with stellar FM and tone sections.

The rosewood and built-in handles makes that a second-generation -130 receiver. Actually a conservative 150 wpc.

I have that receiver and it also has no tuner display. Must be a common problem. I paid about $65 and it's worthless in the present state.

Consider The Receiver tops out at around $200. Dead display can be a bad solder joint (best case scenario) or a dead control chip (worse case scenario). IMO, $50 is still a gamble.

My Carver Reciever also had the display problem you describe... Must be common.

I never got it fixed and the unit did not survive the last time I moved. Stupid. That was before I knew of AK. Even though the unit was dead, those parts are valuable to someone.

I would skip the Carver Receiver altogether and move up to a proper amplifier. Like the TFM series. Those kick the Receiver's butt.

Yeah, I think mine has the same problem (have to pull it out and see). Passed on a second one for cheap because of that and the heat they generate. Should have grabbed it.
