I saw these earlier. I first saw the heading and was thinking "sweeeet!" then I clicked on it and decided I didn't need any more misfit speakers around this joint. Shame...I hope somebody gets them who will do them right.

Notice the lower woofer has a goofy dust cap too, not sure if even that one is factory.

Stock woofers come up all the time on ebay. I think with just a little refinishing of the cabs and replacement woofers these are pretty much good to go.. For $150 you start out way ahead of the game.

Those appear to have the original midranges, but both the woofs are not original. The one is missing the back peg-leg, which could easily be fabricated. The veneer seems to be damaged heavily at the base -- yikes. The cost to re-veneer those cabinets would be extremely expensive; I'm guessing around $200 or more per cabinet, and that would be if you did it yourself.

I'd have to pass on those.

To me those cabs look a litle water damaged, but I wonder if a little tung oil finish wouldn't straighten them up to as new...Worth a try at least for $150.

that's kinda what i was thinking. the picture is blurry enough that you won't really know what you're dealing with until you see them in person. perhaps we could get Fisherdude or another Nap-townie to stop by and report back if he's not too busy? god, my wife would kill me if i brought home another big infinity project...:thmbsp:

If you look closely at the photo, you can see the bottom of the water damaged area flaring outward, which means there has been swelling. I would wager that these had been sitting in standing water (in a basement perhaps?) for enough time to cause major issues. Usually swelling of the MDF or Particle Board would be tough to restore without some new veneer. Perhaps a new strip of veneer around the base area?

if the bubbling of the MDF is bad, i'd stay away too. i'm still not sure from the photo that there is any problem with it, but it's definitely likely if that much stain was lost. i emailed the seller to see if he could clarify.

My question was if the water damage has caused bubbling or peeling of the veneer as well as the washed out stain that is obvious from the picture. Here is the response:

"no veneer stain is missing there though. not sure why"

Would you also interpret this as "no bubbling or peeling - the veneer stain IS missing there though, not sure if the cause is water or something else"?

The "wings" are solid oak, the centers are MDF.

You will sink a fortune into them trying to make them sing again, although maybe good for a frankenspeaker project. I would almost bet cash one of those tweets is toast too.
