CD player with nice analog sound.

My 1988 Denon 1500II CD player had a nice analog sound until it died. After that it was dead quite........ So I replaced it with the aforementioned (in post #9) Cambridge CXC CD transport to feed the DAC in my Bryston Integrated Amp.

Don't discount the better DVD players from around 2005. I use a Denon 1920 SACD/DVD player in my living room that has a nice analog sound and it is one of their lower end models.

Denon DVD 2930 and DVD 3910/3930 are three that ought to do a nice job. They have a much better DAC them then my DVD 1920. Just make sure they work if you find one. That's why I much prefer new CD players.

The PS1 has a following but finding a good working example may be difficult. Also using the controller seems less than ideal unless you modify them to bypass.

I had an old Phillips cartridge changer that sounded really nice.
It was branded Realistic and was also branded Marantz. I had bought that CD player new for my mother. It became mine in 2011 and it finely quit reading disc's a couple years ago. That's saying something for a cartridge changer that got almost daily use up until it stopped working.
I wish It was still working, it was my favorite CDP for how it sounded.

JVC CD players with dual or single BBPCM56 DAC(s). I have a single DAC BBPCM56 JVC player. It sounds great bone stock, very analog. Though I upgraded mine recently - did an op-amp swap and power supply recap. Sounds even better now.

The original (standard width) Rega Apollo was the first CD player that I really liked. Avoid the original Saturn.

How do you tell what dac chip is in what CDP withkut oppping the top? I have a Dennon DCM-290 5 disc carousel that was given to me.
It's been sitting in a shelf.

You look at the SERVICE MANUAL PDF online for your model number. In your case, it looks like the DAC in the DENON model DCM-290 is a BBPCM1716E 24bit DAC
