That's an old saw from a decade or more ago -- has been a long time since I've heard anyone mention that. It wasn't all that, which is why nobody does it any more.
I don't use CD a ton or take it very seriously, so I just use a couple 1st gen machines when I feel the need to play a CD (Phillips CD 301, Hitachi DA-1000)
Streaming services have better resolution than CD nowadays; your best bet, like someone mentioned previously, is probably a tube section in your system to introduce some pleasant distortion into things if that's what you desire. Enjoy the music.

My experience with the Sony Playstation 1 (SCHP or whatever 1001) is that it has a very low output compared to many other newer cd players. It isn't the be all, end all for resolution.
However, here's where I kindly disagree with other statements made in this thread - I think it sounds extraordinary to my tired, tinnitus plagued ears.
I have a HEAVILY modded 5005 (Again, not certain that's the number) and it sounds exceptional. It just sounds soft and clean. Easy.
If vinyl sounding cd playback is what you're after, the Magnavox's mentioned and the lowly Sony Playstation 1 (again, the 1001 model) is my recommendation. Also, DO NOT use the multi port thing. Sounds like chit, in my opinion. I use the analog outputs. I know, I know, everyone says to use the multi port, but to my ears, my unmodded one sounds best through the analog outs. Maybe that cord is crap, it surely doesn't favor much in the way of quality.

Also, that Technics/Panasonic MASH circuitry is always solid, if a tiny bit muddy.

Weren't the Magnavox CDP's made by Phillips? I remember seeing a few CDP's branded Philips, Marantz, and Magnavox. All were identical except for the model number and cosmetics, like one was silver and black, another was Champaign, another silver. But they were all the same deck.

That's why sound is subjective, to each their own. My Carver sounds great to me.
I owned a Sony 325 or whatever it was. Very well regarded, had lightning fast tracking ability, and just oozed 80's cool.
To my ears, it was awful and thin, yet folks rave about it.

I bought a Toshiba CD/DVD-A/Mp3 disc player, like 24 years ago, from Frys Electronics, for $70. It sounds fine, and is still in regular rotation, now as my bed-nightstand headphone player (analog out -> inexpensive quasi-tube stereo headphone amplifier). I bought it, because I was just joining the high-resolution wave in recording, and needed a way to playback the recordings. I was, then, and still am, burning to DVD-A format.
My only complaint about it is that it gaps between songs on the DVD-A format (never tried an SACD), but, plays CD's without gaps; though if you listen to commercial studio releases, you might not ever know that it gaps DVD-A format.
The remote control gave up a few years ago though, so, its totally manual operation now. But, still, for the $70, i feel it has paid itself off, and still a nice enough player.
My main player in my front system is a used Denon Elite CD/DVD-A player that I paid less for, and really like it as well. This one came off of craigslist. It plays DVD-A format without any gaps between songs.
I run this one out to a Schitt something or other DAC, via coaxial output.

The MDV-500 played every disc out at the time, from mini disc to laser disc, it's audio presentation was very forward in your face fatiguing.

Funny you mention fatiguing, My Carver was the first player I've owned that wasn't. I got it at a yard sale for 5 bucks. It was hacked up bad but it looks better now. It took me some time, effort, and paint to make it right again. Just an FYI, someone before me crudely cut the face down, I'm guessing to make it fit in a narrow rack, and it looked like a beaver chewed the face down, so I got my grinder out and smoothed the jagged edges off and repainted it.

I thought so until hearing it lol. Thing is it was my first disc player and at $1000 in 1991 not cheap. This didn't do much for digital in my mind so my next player was more in the $200 range and also sounded like ass. Didn't want another $1000 doorstop so a plethora of $200ish players came and went.
After reading the high praise of the Sony DVP NS500V I decided to plunk down $379 against my better judgement and was let down again. Purchased from Audio Advisor and looked at the 900V but wasn't about to waste another $1000 was my thinking.
Well you know the rest of the story, I now have two of the 900V along with the others.
I have a 900V as well.
Honestly, I don't understand what all the fuss about it could be. It sounds.....okay to my ears. Others rave about it, but I never once thought it was stellar. I figured it was me.
My old Yamaha CDX-1100u was one I really enjoyed. Wish I still had that, but with 400 bucks boot I got a pair of Ohm Walsh 300mk2's, and never looked back.
