Celestion Ditton 44

"Any Good" is a broad question.

I have a pair and they are decent British speakers. the Dittons have a loyal following, esp the 66's and sell for good $$. I found a 40 watt reciever did not do justice and they sound much better with my current 120 watt reciever. For reference I prefer my ADS 1230's and Ohlm Walsh 2's.

I liked them when I was using a 100wpc amp. I found them lacking a bit when I converted to low-powered tubes. That said, I liked them better than Ditton 25s as the 44s lack the bass radiator, which I found was not compatible with my room (yeah, maybe I should have tried treating the room first).

One complaint about the Ditton 25/44/66 is the HF2000 tweeter, which seems to blow easily. I'm not sure it's actually fragile, or whether there's a crossover issue. I never had any issue with either pair of Dittons I had.

On the 44's, check to make sure they have the original HF2000 tweets- those were rare and used I believe in Spendor speakers. I've had 2 pair and both did not have the original tweeters. If they are original tweets, then the 44's are the best of that list...

Boy, if you could come across a pair of the Ditton 66's. Yum.... I have a pair of Ditton 44 Series II's that use the 8" woofer/10" passive versus the original 44's single 12" driver. I'd be curious to hear the differences between them. Definitely make sure the tweeters are working....they are quite prices and as rare as hens teeth.

What do you need? Those are very different, though the 15s are closer to the 44s. The 10 is a bookshelf speaker, if I remember right. The 44 will give you the best frequency response.

44's are worth decent bucks so I've been told, especially if they are original and mint

I wasn't aware that the 44 had the HF2000 tweeter. As far as I can recall, the tweeter was a black silk dome, not at all like the HF2000.

Interestingly, many(including me) have commented on the fact that the top-of-the-line 66s don't sound as good as their less expensive brothers, the 25s. The 25s are more balanced with noticeably better treble response. I guess the 2-HF1300s and single HF2000 tweeter of the 25s work very well together.

I owned a pair of 25s and put them up against my friend's 66s. He lost.

having owned several pairs of the 25, 44, 15, 15xr and the 66 i can catagorically say something must have been wrong with the 66 mid for the 25 to win, the mf500 (or md500) and hf2000 combination is amazing, the 25 and 66 both share the same woofer/pbr, but i suppose beauty is in the ear of the listener.

44 should have the hf2000, if not dont touch unless they are very cheap, sealy you may have got confused with the 33.

imho i try and avoid the 33 but i do really like the hf1100 which is a black silk dome. horses for courses. ditton 15xr is much prefered over the ditton 15.

ditton 10 is junk status.

hf2000 used in spendors etc has a different impedance afaik

I'm looking at a pair of "original" (not Series II or 442) 44's locally for dirt cheap. I'm thinking of picking them up to throw them into the mix with the KEF's and IMF TLS50's.... how do you think they will compare? :scratch2:

Sware, I'm not a hoarder! ;)

Wish I had that chance! Never heard any Celestions, but dearly want to. If they're cheap, you should go for them. Experimentation is the name of the game . . .

Had a pair of 44's given to me for free (!!) a couple of years back. They are my office mains now. Crankage Maximus and they Rock!
