Center speaker?

I currently have LS360's Front speakers.

For a projector set up.
Would you recommend using/buying one (1) LS360 for a center speaker with a transparent screen or just a CS350 under the screen?

Thanks

I think the answer to this question depends on your priorities. If audio is highest than out of those two choices the LS360 for the center is most certainly a better option - I believe Kevin M on this forum has that setup and can comment more. On the video priority side I have yet to see a transparent screen that is truly a videophile screen and doesn't compromise the image. Maybe there has been a new one out recently and that has changed...

I own the CS350 and it is pretty good but not at the same level as the LS360s, so another option to look at would be the XR27 which I have heard from Ivan and others blends very well with the LS360s. Making that upgrade is about third in line right now on my too long and expensive priority list...

Hope that helps...

One thing to consider is if there is a possibility of a phase difference at multiple frequencies between the two (different) speakers.

Have you tried a phantom center?

If your mains image well, and/or you have a large "sweet spot", a phantom center can sound better. In this room, I'll never go back to a center channel speaker again.

Just set your center to "none", and your mains will receive the data your center would have. It's worth a try.

I'm not sure you would be able to find a single LS360 with them being out of production so that may not be an option. You already know my position on the CS350. I think you can get a better center. A couple of dealers have told me that the XCS350 will match and is a better center than the CS350. I seem to recall someone at Mcintosh also suggesting it would match and I try the XCS350 since I was unhappy with the CS350. Audioclassics has a XCS350. Big fan of that site as you can try it and send it back if you don't like it.

You are right. The best audio is going to be with identical speakers on the same plane across the front. For video, solid screens still rule the day though I would note that all commerical theaters uses AT screens. Had to get that in there:D. I currently use Screen Research fabric. The former distributor for North America however has started a new company called, Screen Excellence. Recently they demonstrated a new fabric for 4k resolution projectors with a Sim projector. Supposedly this is the first acoustically transparent screen that looks like a solid screen. I believe they call the fabric Enlighter 3 but I no longer see it listed on their website. My suspicion is that bring it to market is taking longer than expected. Seymor AV also sells an excellent and reasonably priced screen. Samples are easy to obtain and that's what I would suggest. See if for yourself and decide. The Seymour AV electric screens are lower cost than many fixed frame screens.

When properly crossed over at 80 Hz the CS350 is an excellent match with the 360s. These were designed and voiced together. If you are trying to run the 350 full range in the bottom two octaves, it will not go low enough but it will blend well with most subs.
If you want a more powerful center this would be the XCS350 as it used larger drivers and will handle more power. Then after that you would go to the XR27 which can handle the bigger amps.

thanks,
Ron-C
