Cerwin-Vega! sound

I'd take my CV R-312's back in a heartbeart.......older CV products were exceptional in the day (including the industrial series). Even the newer JBL products weren't up to the quality of the 70's products IMO, even after the Atlec-Lansing split.

Anyone who has owned a set of these 3-ways will know what I am talking about....full range, nice bass response, but yet balanced mid/highs

I picked up a pair at the thrift for $15.Solid wood cabinets and massive. These were the only speakers that i need a dolly to move. The back indicated that they are model 313 but one ak members info came back with a different speaker for that model #.The surrounds were shot but i am going to have them refoamed. They have one 15 inch woofer and two tweeters above and a tweeter int the back of the speaker.Like another ak member said the woofer frame is like a mag wheel.Anyway I plan on bringing these back to life for some heavy duty rock.Anybody know about this speaker? I can't find any info on it.

Sounds like my R-312 except I had a 12" woofer, and the same rear tweeter.
They were purchased circa, 1977/78.....heavy mothers too! Probably 80# each. Do they look like these (top)?

It seems you're almost doomed to say anything nice about them! Guess I don't give a rats a@@ - got a pair of DX-9's that sound very nice to me, but I'm sure there are better out there. That is also part of the fun - finding that next speaker that's going to put it all together. CV sounds pretty nice depending on whats pushing it, the acoustics, and the person listening. I could say that about a lot of speakers - heard a pair of Advents that sounded like crap (room/reciever) - obviously they all aren't crap.

Just like a previous post - I listened to EPI-200B next to the CV's with my 9090db connected and liked the CV's better. So what does it matter - it's just my opinion, which doesn't mean much to the next guy who likes the EPI's.

I had a pair of C-V S-1s a long time ago. I got them when I was young and foolish. hehe

They were the top-of-the-line C-V speaker at the time and even had a gas bag inside with (I think) sulphur hexaflouride, supposedly to make the cabinet act as if it were larger.

I had them for a few years and then got tired of bumped-up bass and hot treble. They were very much in-your-face, but you lost all the fine detail.

They also tended to sound horrible on anything but rock music.

I replaced them with a pair of Fried Betas (yes, _very_ different speakers) and started listening to all kinds of music, including classical.

I also had this enormous Sherwood integrated amp and quickly got rid of it for an NAD 1020 preamp and a Hafler DH-220 amp. That wound up being a really sweet system.

I'd have to say that they were actually good speakers for me at the time I had them.

They got loud as f**k without much power from the amp, and they could handle a lot of power too.

That came in handy at parties, and I never had a blown amp or speakers. I remember a lot of other speakers and systems that died after abuse at friend's parties.

yamahanutz. couldn't tell by the pics.too fuzzy.one ak member told me they were 317p?.heavy,probably eighty pounds.i am getting them refoamed .They will most likely see duty as a rock speaker pushed by at least 125 wpc as that is what they seemed to be suited best for

I found that was the best format too.....they sounded good at all levels, but better at loud volumes (much punch)...photo was a pic of a pic, sorry!
In fact, I have to contact the guy I sold them too, and see if he wants to sell them back..........not likely though!

Ive got a set of DX-9's powered by a Phase 400 amp, and they shake the house, garage and neighbors houses. And I havent even cranked them yet. The speakers are rated for more than the 400 puts out, but Im still scared to try it. There will be nothing left on the shelves of the house for sure.

I haven't heard any other big floor speaker, but Im impressed with the CV's so why change them out for something that might not perform as well? Im just amazed these aren't more popular...shound good down low, and will rock the neighborhood when cranked. Plus they are fused so you can't really hurt them with too much juice. I just hooked my HDTV up through the Amp and these speakers...next time no one is home im going to put in something like The Matrix and see how they sound. Should be fun :music:

Yeah, even the commercial grade stuff was fairly decent.....can't remember the series V ???? (twin 12"s, horn, and (2) piezo supertweeters) in a ported enclosure.

guys,, have a nice pair of d-3s just pro re-foamed and checked out by midwest speaker but i can,t get into them ,,i,m trying to love them but so far no go maybe i need to get them off the floor ,,any suggestions out there so far all i use them for is to put my yamaha book shelves on

If they are anything like my old CV's, too much bottom on the floor.
Try raising them and they won't sound as "boomy", if that is what your problem is.

I had the S1. It had a 12", a 4 or 5" mid cone driver, and a horn-loaded phenolic dome tweeter.

I don't honestly remember the S2 though. Was it larger or smaller than the S1?

I think the biggest reason CV gets a bad rap is. They are related to the Disco era. Every nite club you went in during that time had big CV's hanging from the ceiling. Powered by Macs. They used them cause the were loud, rugged and cheaper than others. But why most used Macs to push them I will never figure out.
Damn I looked good on that SNF dance floor. Hell the speakers can't be that bad if the Bee Gee's sounded good on them. Problee that indoor snow storm helped some too.

Ithink the "tube sound" has a lot to due with the soft clipping of tubes. Distorted sound, but not percieved. SS amps hard clip and is noticable right away.

There seem to be a lot of factors involved. (Also, it's possible to have SS designs soft-clip. NAD did this years ago, for example.)

I suspect that it's mainly the high output impedance of the tube amps.

Remember when Bobby Carver made his amps sound identical to a high-priced Conrad-Johnson amp, and then later on just like his own Silver Seven tube amp?

Several people have said that the main thing he did was to increase the output impedance of the SS amp to an ohm or so. (Some of the Sunfire amps evidently have to sets of output jacks with one being normal low impedance and the other having a 1 ohm resistor in series.)

I was never into Disco, and never went to any Disco clubs.

I just found that the CV speakers weren't very subtle. That's why I sold my C-Vs and moved on.
