Wow! I saw this on TV before. I can't believe when he holds that rod out, it never seems to stop arcing, and he touches the line anyway!! I don't know what's scarier, the height, or the hundreds of kilovolts? In theory you wouldn't get electrocuted, but I wouldn't want to bet my life on it.

I saw a segmant similar to this on Modern Marvels on History Channel. Pretty damn neat to watch them do their work. I think I'll pass, I don't like heights that much.

Birds do it every day when they lite on a power line. And they don't discharge anything first.

But, if you look more closely, you never see a bird on the higher-voltage power lines. They can sense the field way before it gets to the point of arcing and avoid it.
