Comparing mx113 vs mx110

I have a restored mx113 with new glass powered with mc2200 amp.
I found an original mx110 for 2000.00 and I’m curious of the sonic diff between mx110 and mx113 given one is tube and other solid state paired with same mc 2200 amp .

An mx110 is more collectible and desirable with the main difference being it is a tubed preamp and tuner. That being said, the two phono stages in the 110 are lush and everything that tubes bring to the table. Of corse that could be said for all of the other functions including the tuner in the 110. So it’s a matter of choice, do you prefer tubes? And do you want something that is more desirable and will increase in value more? If so then the 110 if for you. I have a 110z and have done quite a bit of restoration work on it and it really delivers. If you collect, snatch it up but know that it may probably need some work unless you’re really lucky. That MX113 is no slouch either mind you, If it's restored I'd certainly want to keep it and 2K can go other places. I have a restored MX114 and wouldn't trade it for a mx110, its that nice. Good luck with what ever you decide.

After six or seven years I decided to replace my MX110 with the MX113. Tuner section was better in the 113 otherwise I found it to perform every bit as well as the 110. The loudness comp curve is the one item I didn’t care for in the 113.

I especially liked the way the 113 matched the MC2505 amplifier. The lighted tuning dial indicator of the 113 was especially appreciated in dim room lighting.

I found my MX110z to sound just a bit more clear and open than my mx114. The tuner on the mx114 was more consistently good sounding (mx110z needs tubes to warm up and get fully aligned), but sonically the mx110z is just a pinch better to my ears. So I kept the mx110z, bought a second one for a project, and bought an mr71 for upstairs. I like the way tube units sound, but I also enjoy fiddling with and working on my gear, so it's a win/win for me. The mx113 will just work and work well for you. The mx110z needs some fiddling with every once in a while.

Best of all, it never needed to go back on the bench apart from the initial tune up when I first got it.

My memory may be hazy but my recollection is that majority of the issues were related to the tuner.

Were the tuner issues effecting other inputs of the 110 or just the tuner? I never use my tuner, but the phono and aux are incredible. Full restoration about 2 years ago. Also can we throw the mx112 into the comparison discussion? I just picked up one recently that needs to be serviced.

In my case no it was just the onboard tuner with issues. At the time it was here (pre-streaming) a tuner was an essential part of my rig. Strangely enough the all original mac 1700 that I owned for a while also had a tube tuner but never had a tuner problem. That 1700 also had one of the nicest sounding fm tuners I've ever heard. Not as sensitive as my mr 78 but much better sounding.
