CONICAL LOVE -Who loves running a conical needle on a cartridge most don't???

I may buy one next week to place on the PS-LX500. I've been debating it forever and a day. The fellows at Ring Audio seem to have a number of P-Mounts in Toronto. They have an Audio Technica AT3482 at $46; AT3472 at $78; Shure M92 at $78; and an Ortofon OM10 at $110. So the 3482P may be a good bet.
I have an Audio Technica AT3482P on my linear tracking Sansui turntable. It sounds and tracks very well. I would certainly recommend it, though $46 is way more than what it costs online (yes I'm aware it's in Canadian dollars).

Smooth. I'm not a detail oriented guy, but prefer an overall smooth presentation. When people say that I'm missing something from the recording, I just laugh. For me it's about the overall presentation that's important. Tubes, easy to push speakers, vinyl, and conical(or fatter ellipticals) styi are my cup of tea. Not just for older, more beat up records, but for everything. Shure M44, M3 or M7D, Stanton 500, I really love these carts. They have bold presentations, they have louder outputs which make them perfect for vintage phono's like the ones in my Fisher gear. Ultimately, I find them to be just a lot more fun.

My Shure M3, M-44, M-7N21D, and my V15 II improved all make me quite happy.

So I went to Ring Audio and picked up an AT3482P. Now it came in a Tonar box with no writing on the cart itself. Will this model still have the carbon cantilever?

If the Stanton D6807A stylus were still easily available genuine, I'd likely use little else for most daily use. My favorite conical ever. For noisier records, the D6800AL would be that choice.

I recently acquired a Shure M35X, which is a conical, to see what it is all about. As A teenager I went from ceramic to a elliptical, never had a conical.

I really like the M35X. It needs a medium to heavy arm. Once aligned it played cleanly with no IGD. It has a full driving sound, great bass ... it lacks some of the the inner details and finesse of the higher end styli but still very pleasant to listen too.

Are you speaking of the Pfanstiehl D6800AL, the white one that needlestein recommends, or is that a genuine Stanton? I'd like to have something for XV-15s when I don't want to use the Stereohedron, like on rougher 45s.

Pfanstiehl is not it. Must be GENUINE Stanton, Plainview, NY manufactured preferably. NO OTHER! The real deal. Jico's generic D6800A is very good even if it needs to be tracked a bit heavier. D6800AL is heavy duty, 18,000 Hertz response limit, heavier tracking. Jico's version of that too is very good.

Thank you, Kent. I appreciate you. These aren't exactly cheap but I understand that quality always has a price so I'll keep looking for the real thing.

I just wanted to bump or repost this because after I posted, no one answered it, and it's already gone from the first page. I just want to get an answer if possible. :)

Hey Jody!

I can't say certainly about the Tonar box but the 3482P designation indicates the carbon fibre cantilever while the aluminum variety is called an AT90 or the stylus is called a 3472C. Do you have the product in hand? If so the cantilever will be black. If it is aluminum then it is not a real 3482. I believe all 3482s also have black plastic knobs/housings while many of the others including the conical/spherical ones are white.

Best regards.

The bodies of all the Audio-Technica p-mounts that look like the 3482P are the same, so it doesn't matter what color it is or what it says or doesn't say on the body. It is, however, important to see writing on the stylus, and the stylus should be black with white printing. It should say "Audio-Technica" and have the A-T logo, and there should be a dot indicating that the diamond is conical. tubewade's advice to look at the cantilever is to the point. It should be just as black as the stylus's plastic grip.

I'm at work but the housing is black plastic, and the cantilever and stylus are more dark as well. I'm sure it will sound fine. I think you've reassured my concerns.
:)

Heck, I almost forgot the conical stylus (white dot) supplied with the ADC Model 25 Pickup System from way back in 1969. Tracks my worst '80s LPs at 0.75 gram.

@needlestein I saw that D6807A on ebay but just can't justify that kind of outlay for it. I still have my eyes open for one of these based on KentT.s recommendation but meanwhile I did just buy a genuine Stanton D6800AL to play with for a while and got it for much less $$ . Unlike many people I am not put off by high tracking forces so if it sounds good on 45s and old and worn LPs that's all I care about. I'll also get quite a bit of enjoyment doing comparisons between the genuine Stanton and the aftermarket (Colombian?) version sold on ebay as 4822-D7A.

Oh, I think I'll keep using my Pickering XV15 for the daily driver ... just love the sound of that thing ... much more ... muchness ...

Have had several projects here with Pickering XV 15 with a broken stylus. These were replaced with Shures. I never threw them away. Went in the cartridge box. I put one on my friend's Marantz 6300. NOS. has a nice sound on the record stores system. I have two. Bought the generic conical so to try on them. Put it on my Dual 601 (shop) and it sounds pretty good. I have a 1229 and 1219. They all have the same headshell and at some point I will run the Pickering on them. Glad I didn't toss them away!

After a lifetime of mid-range tt's and various elliptical styli I happened upon a Sansui P-L50 linear tt with a proprietary AT cartridge and conical stylus. Not expecting much I put my usual test records on, sat back and closed my eyes. Totally non scientific, but (drumroll please) I absolutely adore this player. No matter what I put on it, I find it exceptional in every way I care about. Sure did ruin my prior assumptions. I especially like the imaging. Is it the linear turntable? The cartridge, stylus? Frankly don't much care, but I am not going back!
