Cornwall II

Those speakers on top are my pride and joy, my first and most successful speaker restoration. They are a beautiful pair of Acoustic Research AR-2A's. I was going to buy the pre built risers off Crites website and small spike those.

Nice:thmbsp: I purchased mine in raw Birch with the risers new in 1979 for

$918.00 for the Corns and $24.00 for the risers. Then in 1989 I paid $740.00
raw birch Heresy II no risers. My Brother had risers he had from his HII as he had his on stands. I added some links on the classified for the reels and there is a pic of my Black Piano veneer Cornwalls I had done 25 years ago and they still look good. Those AR-2 look Good...:yes:

I am rather surprised that you weren't impressed with the Maggy on your Cornwalls...I hope that the crossover upgrade works for you....My Crites upgraded Cornwalls sounds good with just about any amp...even my flea power tube amps....

Ya, I was surprised I wasn't very pleased with the sound either but I just didn't care for the sound it produced. Maybe these Firestone monoblocks will give me a better result. I love the ss amp I am using now but I really would like a more tubey warm sound than what my ss amp delivers.
 
Those Firestone amps look pretty sweet...:) I wish you luck....I would try a set of matched output tubes in your Maggy first....Just my two cents...

The set I am using is a matched NOS Magnavox 6V6GT's. I guess it's a bit picky what speaker it wants to drive. It runs my less efficient AR Classic Fives fantastically.

I forgot, did you check the cross over networks in the Cornwalls? It seems to me if the maggie plays the AR good the Cornwalls would sound good too.:scratch2:

The 1989 CW II was original, so I believe it has the K-52-K mid driver, which is also the same driver that is in my 1983 CW's. I can't really put my finger on it, but the difference was huge. Unfortunately, the CW II's sold just a couple of days ago, so I won't be able to investigate any further. I will be installing Dave's Fastrac's, along with ALK's Universals in my CW's very shortly. I just placed the orders within the past couple of days and can't wait!

It has been quite an adventure recently, with four sets of Klipsch in house. I had two sets of Cornwalls, Quartets and RF-7 II's all occupying space in my living room at the same time. You will be happy to hear that the upgraded Quartets are my favorite of the bunch. I recently installed Crites crossovers in the Quartets as the final piece of the puzzle. They sound AMAZING. I will see how the upgraded CW's compare when I finally get upgrades completed on those. They are almost as good as the Quartets now, so I can only imagine how great they will be when completed. The RF-7 II is also a very nice speaker, but is definitely a distant third, and maybe just a hair better than the CW II's I had. The RF-7 II's are up for sale now as well...

Just wanted to state that the Quartet's that I was referencing in this post are by no means stock. They have been heavily modified with an extensive amount of internal bracing and damping, a KLF-20 woofer replacement, retuned passive, Ti diaphragms all around, and Crites crossover networks with the bandpass filter add-on. These were formerly owned by community member moray james who did all the upgrades, minus the crossover replacement which I did myself just recently.

moray, please chime in here if I left anything out...
 
So, I was going over the pricing on the Crites page and to do the crossover, tweeter, midrange, and the riser stand is going to be around $400. Does that sound about right? Also, that's without replacing the woofer which seems unessecary.

Did you just purchase new cross overs like I did or a re-cap kit, etc? Did I miss a post with a list?
 
Well, I haven't done anything yet. Plan is to replace the mid and tweeter diaphragms, install risers, and replace the crossovers and keep the originals as backups. I think I'm going to replace the grill cloth as well because it's a bit faded.
