Hi all,

I need a crash course on the Marantz 2230; one is up for sale on my local CL for $150 negotiable. What should I look for and what should I expect for that much money?

Thx!

Yep, that is a little too high. I would pay anywhere between $100-125 MAX depending on condition. I sould mine for about $120 and it was in mint, and I don't mean ebays version of mint, condition.

My only regret with tht 2230 is I wish I could have recapped it. Of almost all the Marantz receivers the 2230 is still my favorite. And I've had a good number of them, including the 18 & 19.

Just like SoCal Sam said, unless it is mint and has the wooden case, that is on the high side for the current going rate.

I see them listed regularly for $100.

If it sells on eBay,who knows what it will bring,it all depends on how bad they want it or just get caught up in the bidding frenzy.

Here is the Craig's List ad:

Vintage Marantz model 2230 receiver-$150
Vintage Sony STR-7065 receiver w/wood box-$65
Vintage Yamaha R-700 natural sound receiver-$60
Vintage Pioneer PL-12D-II turntable-$90
Bose series 301-II speakers-3 for $150
Bose series 201-II speakears pair-$80
ask about the VINTAGE RECORD collection.

All prices negotiable.

I sent an email response and hope to see all of this equipment. I am interested in the receivers, primarily. I have plenty of speakers for now. The Pioneer turntable also interests me, so I may be able to get a good price for two or three components.

Edit: Am I within the forum rules by posting here, or should I post in a different forum, geared more towards buying/selling?

I recently found one for $10 at a garage sale. Still can't believe my luck. Needs some cleaning, bulbs and feet but there are guys on AK that are a great help with that.

In the general scheme of things... depending on your income and desire levels... come on guys, $150 isn't really that much for a classic now is it?!

Of course it is so much sweeter if you can get a deal...

Report on equipment

Thanks for all of the timely responses to my query. I went and looked at the guy's gear today and while I liked what I saw, I didn't think that what he had was worth the price. I offered $225 for the 3 receivers and the turntable. He said $250, I said I'd think about it.

The Marantz seemed fine, but the Sony had a channel out and the Yamaha had an issue with the Spatial Expander knob (whatever that is); it felt like it was slipping on the shaft.

I had another stop to make to pick up some electronic test equipment that I had won on ebay. While there, I poked around and picked up this equipment:

I have powered up the turntables to check their functions and they all work fine. I have not tried the Marantz, nore have I listened to the turntables. I don't remember enough about turntables to know what kind of cartridges I have (magnetic, etc.).

I gave $100 for all three components, so we'll see....:scratch2:

If anyone has experience with these units, I'm all ears. I will probably search the turntable and Marantz forums tonight to educate myself.

PS There are links posted beneath the pictures for more pictures.

The Marantz is early eighties.I have the pm400 model .Yours is the next step up and totl. Not alot of info on these. Not bad sounding but not quite up to the same level as the earlier stuff.

Nice tables. Did you give the guy with the Marantz your number? This is one of those situations where after a week or two, they figure out they're overpricing the merchandise and give you a call. $100 is right on for a fair price for a unit in perfect working condition and no wood case. Make sure the phono section works properly. To test, bring a table with a ground wire and test it ahead of time to make sure the table doesn't hum (many do). I have about 10 mid wattage receivers from various manufacturers and I can tell you with a great deal of conviction that the Marantz 2230 is an excellent unit, very unique sounding. It instantly replaced the HK 730 as my favorite vintage receiver.

Hmmmm - good point, lukiedog. He does have my number, but I think the ball is in my court. I should prolly give him a call and bait the hook a little.

I dont know, 250 for two and possible three damaged units. I like repairing units kinda therapeutic for me, just doesnt seem to be good ROI. I have a 2220 which is the little bro of the 2230 and it sounds great but for that kinda money I would get the 2238B. There are many out there on the bay that are bench tested for about $200-250. Just my 2 pesos.
