maybe they'll spend some of that money and buy a camera for next time zero history and no pictues and $4500 :dunno:
 
This appears to be the real deal. I've contacted the seller, and he has been very forthcoming. He posted pictures at my recommendation, and answered a few questions that only someone with a CX-10000 (or the users guide) would be able to answer. Here's the latest email I received from the seller:

Hi,

No worries, I understand you being skeptical buying something over the
internet and I'm more than happy to answer any other queries you may
have. My dad actually gave me the CX-10000 a few years ago after it
had been in dry storage for years. He managed to buy it new back in
1988 (I think) because he worked for a shipping line that dealt with
Japan. I'm not much of an audio enthusiast and I never use the pre
amplifier, so I thought I would try sell it. I will take some photos
of the pre amplifier with a newspaper as you said to add to my
credibility. As for bona fides, this is the first time I've sold
something of this value on the internet, but my father tells me that
he recently sold an expensive watch to a man in San Francisco who
should be able to vouch as for our integrity.

I have no affiliation with this sale. My interest is solely in helping an AK member to get a "like new" CX-10000.
 
I'm wondering if it's a 240 volt unit.He doesn't mention it in the A'gon ad.

I can't afford it,but I'd be somewhat confused if it wasn't a 240V model.
 
Also why does the A'gon ad say "incl shipping in the US" ?

Wouldn't that be a feature of a unit being shipped within the US as opposed coming from outside the US?
I'm aware that it might be a 'carrot' to entice a US buyer.I just find it unusual...
 
Atleast it was kept in "dry storage". I hate it when people keep expensive equipment out in the rain.:smoke:
 
Looks to be in mint shape, but still too expensive.

Theo: it's a 240V unit (G) I can see the German Post&telegraf sign on the back (the black sticker with a post horn on it). But notice the small plate next to the power cord, it might be that it can be switched to 120V (J).

The U model is easy to recon, it has 6 power outleds on the back (here Mark Bs unit).

No XLR in/out and no optical inputs kills it for me. Also the built in DACs should be outdated. I think i' ll wait for the XMC-1 from Emotiva.
 
I think if you are not a hard core collector you can do better for the money, don't forget that any 20 year old preamp is gonna have to be recapped sooner rather than later. $4.5K can get you some serious future proof pre-pros ready for the high resolution formats of the next decade.

To each his own, but this has nothing to do with collecting. The CX-10000 IS that good.
 
I was under the impression this was $4500 NZ dollars as well. Converting that to U.S. dollars, it's quite worth it. I'd be all over it but getting a CX-10000 would then lead me on a quest to get the MX-10000 and the CDX-10000 and since I already have the 2000series amp and tuner, It would be best suited for me to look for the 2000 pre. I think the limiting factors is that the seller is out of the U.S. and things are still economically tough for a lot of people. Still a very nice pre that even if you weren't a collector and weren't a yamaha fan per se would still make sense to look into getting.

Do you have a schematic of this preamp ?? I'd like to see what's under the bonnet and how it compares to the cheaper Yamaha preamps ;)

Despite his e-mails to Mark.B having the 'ring of truth',I still have questions.

The 'German horn sticker' which indicates that it is a 240 volt unit;Is that placed on the component in Germany or in Japan when it leaves the factory? :scratch2:
 
I was tempted by the one for $1300 USD on hifido a two weeks ago. Someone got a super nice piece at a CRAZY GOOD price.

The listed price was 140,000¥ which is about $1500US. I waited a week for an AKer to get it, then made an offer. I was told it was being held for someone. A few days ago I received an email from HiFiDo saying it was mine if I wanted it. Hell yes I wanted it. It arrived today. I started a thread in the VSS forum.
