DBX Soundfield speakers. Anyone still running them?

I may be picking up a pair of DBX SF-10s later today and wanted to hear ANY opinions, advice, or feedback anyone may have about them.

Much thanks in advance.

I picked up a pair of Soundfield V's with sub last year for about the price of a case of cheap beer. Thinking they might make good garage speakers. I hope those sound better you are picking up. Because looking back now....I shoulda bought a case of beer instead.

Geez, they don't sound bad at all. You just have to listen for a while.

Does anyone know anything about these freaks of nature?

No experience with the full speakers, but I had the huge passive subwoofer with the 15inch woofer which DAK sold. For the $99 it was very good, deep, tight bass.

Opinions are mixed on the full systems.

Unfortunately I don't have the SFC-10 controller for the speakers either. Would anyone know where one is available for sale?

The speakers sound quite good with a slight amount of EQ. I would love to hear the difference the controller makes.

tyger-- i acquired a pair of sf-10s about 7-8 years ago, and posted a good bit about them here on AK. mine did not have the controller and i did not like the sound without it at all, even though i tried to eq it. i launched an internet search blitz and eventually came up with a guy who had the correct controller, and it significantly improved things. i next discovered that the surrounds on the woofers were on their last legs, but again somehow discovered that an inexpensive Pioneer branded 10" woof available at Parts Express was the exact replacement. mind you, i'm working from a number of years worth of memory, so....

the x-overs are extremely complex, as it is a three way design with two woofs in each cab, and if memory serves, 4 tweeters in the domes. plus all the business with the eq and ....well, you'll see. somehow, i was relentless about experiencing these speakers as they were intended. there was quite a bit of good review about them back in the day, and i was convinced that i had something really cool, which, in a way, i did.

next i mounted them up on heavy casters so they could be rolled in and out of position and also nullify vibrations into the floor. i was struck by the presentation of the deep, centered soundstage from any seating position, but i could never get happy with the following: boomy bass, shouty midrange, and shrill tweeters. perhaps if i'd recapped...? but by that point i was a year and a good bit of effort and $$ into them and i just stopped loving them.

sold to a guy in california who joined AK after seeing my posts about them and sent me a PM asking if i'd sell, which i happily did for several hundo's

have fun, and put a big strong amp on them

My comments about a case of beer and those speakers (the SF-V's) were simply a joke, a comparison. Nothing more nothing less. Some got it some didn't...some have a sense of humor (however warped that may be) and some don't.

I truly hope you enjoy those speakers you got.

The sf1s are great. I suspect the 10s are too. Unfortunately without the controller they won't perform as designed. And good luck (seriously) in finding one. It took me a year or so to find one for my sf1s (won't work with the 10s). I think they're made of unobtanium :(

DAK's "DBX"(?!) speakers were just cheap 'n cheerful semi-junk for those waiting until they could afford actual Hi-Fi equipment. they actually weren't awful some of them imo. the final version of the 15" sub was not too bad actually if you watched the volume. my neighbor of many years ago found out i was an 'audiophile' so wanted me to hear his knew DAK system with the sub. it was loud and annoying on rock/pop and when we switched to a classical FM station things improved a little. from what i could determine over time, the cabs were not braced at all with a big 15" in there and minimal crossover. the big sub was a little better built and i almost bought one for $99 and free shipping in the last days of DAK.

I heard the actual DBX speakers when they first appeared at the CES and the way they were set up at the show was very impressive sound imo.

but to me, Drew Kaplan knew how to market stuff and the cost of these things he sold was pretty low compared to worse junk at local dept. stores etc.

soundfield 10's

been using mine since 1986. good speaker, needs at least 100 watts/ch to sound their best. speakers should have nothing placed between them so inside speakers are not obstructed. nicest thing about them is you can walk around the room and always hear both speakers with perfect balance. enjoy.

I have a pair of DBX Soundfield one speakers.I am the original owner.I also purchased an Adcom 555 power amp.and an Adcom pre amp tuner. The speakers are in like new condition. The only maintenance they required, the past thirty years was to have the 8 woofers refoamed.

I just refoamed a pair of SF-100s and they actually sound quite good!

The SF-10s needed the EQ, IIRC.

There is a SF-10 controller on ebay: search for:

By any chance do you have a copy of the owners manual (users guide) that came with the DBX Soundfield 1, or 1A, speakers? About 25 years after I first heard them I finally scored a set of 1A's. I love them, but I'd like to see what the manual says about tweaking the settings on the controller.
