DCM TF 700 Refurb starting soon

The new terminal plate cups came in this afternoon. I only had to drill a few new holes so the binding posts would sit flush onto the cup. I was even able to remove the origional name plates from the back of the old ones and reuse them. Heres a few more pics.
Now they are complete.

KIngBubba, the TF 600's crossover is much different than these. Great pics by the way.

Hey Rod; That's an awesome looking job you've done with those tf's. I'm looking forward to hearing the results. Hopefully I'll be able to rather than spending the weekend in jail due to some very audible fireworks. Maybe we can play Hendrick's version of the star spangled banner to celebrate the 4th?

Rod

Outstanding job!
If I can rehab my 350's and 500's half as well I will be proud.

I have mine stripped down I just need to work up the courage to order the cloth and try to tackle the "sock issue". There are skilled seamstresses in my house so I am not sure how I am going to approach the problem.

Hi Rod,

Just stopping by to give you a thumbs up on a fine resto project. :thmbsp:
If only I had half of your patience, I could move mountains!

I am giving the TF600s a serious look now to replace the JBL 2600s as my fronts & move them to surround duty.

Fine Fine work Rod,
Rome

Thanks Wolverine and Rome.
If I can do it anyone can. It might have taken me twice as long as someone else to get them done but I wanted them to be as close to origional as possible without screwing them up.
Keep us posted on your progress with the 350's, 500's Wolverine and the 600's if you get them Rome.

I am about to start the same project on my 700's. I hope I can do as good a job. If I recall I think mine has a plastic cover down the entire back of the speaker on the outside of the sock but maybe I am crazy. I will have to take a close look when I get home.

Pictures of tf700

The back looks much different on mine???
Maybe someone has changed these???

I want to say No, I highly doubt someone changed them. I have two sets of TF600's and one has the board piece on the rear like yours. But the other set looks like the backside of Rod's TF700's. Both set's of 600's sound the same, no difference at all. No difference in crossovers, drivers etc. When I first received them I thought the same thing. But everything is identical except for the backside. Please someone chime in if I'm wrong here.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking.

They do look factory. too perfect to be hme made i think. The person I bought them from told me he was the original owner and I think he said he bought them in 89. Thats good, I am acually very happy about it. I think it will make it a lot easier to re-do the grilles. Instead of having to sew together a sock i can just streach around back and secure under the cover. I am wondering if I should consider changing the drivers at all in these? I do not want to mess up the sound, they sound great. but If I keep the crossovers and the cabinet and get newer drivers that are good they should sound the same right? I would like to have these for a while and don't mind putting a few bucks into them. Any thoughts? I want to change up the grilles a bit, I think I am going to do them in a dark navy blue and add a high varnish to the oak. I really want to make these the focal point of the front of the den I am re-doing. I also want them to fill it with sound nicely!

Thanks

I just picked up some TF 700's that are S/N'd 001924 and 001925-the back and round binding post cup is the same as yours-obviously an early version of the design
I will also be reskinning the grill cloth-the original is intact-thinking if i use a seam ripper/razor blade to cut the threads out, i should have a good pattern to cut the new cloth.
I am wondering if you can tell me how much grill cloth to order-will 3 linear yards be enough?

I purchased my grill cloth from Parts Express. The link is in the first post of this thread.
I ordered a qty. of 4 and had plenty left over to do a few other sets of speakers.
Good luck with yours.

thanks-i got these speakers home and found that the left tweet (vifa) had launched the magnet off the plastic basket-picked up a pair on Ebay-and will be changing both sides out. I am impressed with the bass these put out from a 8" speaker:banana:

The latest is my pair of early issue TF700's have issues-as mentioned, the left speaker had a blown tweeter, magnet was blown right off the back-picked up a set of vifa d19 td-08 8ohms(MISSION TWEETS) and installed 1 on the left panel and really got no noticable sound from the replacement. I can get scratch from the speaker from a 1.5vAA battery-I clipped out the mid and woofer(seems as if the woof is running full range) and hear faint music with the vol turned up and tone set to all treble/no bass on the tone settings-I'm geussing that there is a crossover issue. Anyone on this forum have info /schematic/troubleshooting skills with these Xovers??

update-ordered new electrolytic caps and 5 watt resistors-found some of the resistors were either open or way out of tolorance. now have all 3 speakers working and will be replacing grill cloth soon(already purchased)

Does anyone know a source where I can purchase the plastic speaker terminal cups for the TF 700's? Outside dimentions are 7" X 5". There are also 6 stand offs on the back of the cup that the crossover screws to. These have quite the crossover. I'll post pics when I get home from work.
Someone was in one of them and replaced the speaker terminals....put them in upside down to boot. Very poor job indeed. Looks like a hole was made with a soldering iron and then the plastic broken away with cutters. The terminal plate is cracked in many different places. I replaced the binding posts with the new ones from PE and sealed up all of the cracks for now but would like to replace them if possible.
I have an enquiry in at DCM and waiting to hear back from them.

I'm also looking for new plastic rectangular plates for my TF1000 speakers
