DCM TF 700 Refurb starting soon

Rod: If I missed it, how did you get your original terminal cup decal off the old terminal plate? heat it up with a hair dryer? And what did you use for adhesive to put it on the new plate?

I lifted the edge with a fingernail and the rest came right off. Never applied any glue, just stuck it on the new plate.
The TF's went back to the friend I bought them from then on to another friend in town. The decals are still on both of them.

I was able to get the other set of binding posts installed today. When I pulled the crossover I noticed I didn't see any poly stuffing. Upon closer inspection, this one that had not been touched, has the poly fill rolled and tucked up into a chamber inside the cab leaving the bottom open. I took the other one apart again and fixed the poly in that one. Someone pulled it out and spread it into the bottom area of the cab. Replaced the screws I used for the posts so all now match.
Just have the grill cloth left to tackle.

I'm joining the party late... Looks like this thread goes back to 2008. I'm in the process of going through my whole house, cleaning, updating, trashing stuff we haven't used in 20 years, etc. Among other equipment I have a pair of TF 700's that, if memory serves, I picked up in the early 90's. They've only had occasional use in the last several years. I'll have to treat them to see if all the drivers are still working, but so far have no memory of any problems.

Unfortunately we've always had cats (wife's insistence!), and the ones we had about 20 years ago messed up the speaker socks. I also like the idea of setting up jacks on the back for speaker connection - maybe for banana plugs. Once I get the socks off I guess I can really tell if all the drivers are intact.

I'll be interested in comparing notes with anyone else who still has an interest in these speakers and maybe has experience with these refurbs.
 
Woo-hoo! Dumpster gold!

I pulled a pair of oaken TF700s off the top a dumpster yesterday.

One of the drivers makes no sound. As a quick test, I thought it was a mid, but looking at the nude pictures above, maybe it's a tweeter. I'll re-listen. I do not yet know if the problem is crossover, fuse, wiring, or driver.

The oak caps are perfect, which is a shame, as I have carpentry skills. Don't even need a wipe with polyurethane. Not inconceivable that I'll replace them with cherry anyway to match other items in the house, but this is very far down the priority list.

One sock is perfect, the other has two _tiny_ snags. Both are dusty. I generally do not like large dark objects, so will likely replace these with a funkier silver or gold flecked beige cloth. Or with hippy flower cloth. Or leave them nude and veneer the front. Whatever.

The swing out feet need to be tighter. I've not flipped the units to see if they just need tightening, shimming, or replacing. All easy.

I'm not adding links because they'll be dead in the near future and annoy future readers. I searched on Amazon for "speaker cloth", and on eBay for "silver speaker cloth."
 
With this thread resurrection, I'm reading it for the first time and I'm actually surprised with the driver complement in the TF700 compared to the two pair of TF600s I have. The 600s have two larger drivers on the front with the upper one having a tweeter mounted on a screen that covers the upper woofer for a sort of co-axial result The 600 also has that front-mounted tweeter as well as one on each corner in the BACK. And, contrary to what was mentioned in the earlier posts in this thread, my 600 has the bulb "fuse" in the crossover. I also have a pair of TF500s, but I'd be curious to try the 700s since there is so much written comparing the 600 to the 700 I'd just have to hear them side-by-side. The TF500s were my first but honestly I never play then after getting my first pair of 600s. Now that I have two pair of 600s I appreciate them even more and actually spent money replacing the non-original tweeter the previous owner's repair guy had installed when he missed the fact that the woofer behind it was also dead! All fixed now. Found near-exact tweeter replacements on AliExpress and posted them in several threads. Maybe $12 a pair, shipped.
