DCM TF600 quandary

I held onto the original tweeter I replaced in my 600’s…I want to examine it. Can you access the fluid area without destroying the speaker?

Man, I was sure hoping someone knew how. I do believe one has to remove the dust cap.

Remove the two screws on the rear & the magnet comes right off, the tweeters on my cx-27s sound much better with fresh ferrofluid.. just use caution when separating the two parts, that old ferro could act like glue if it's really gummed up, the voice coil looks really fragile in these..

Thank you so much!

Also, I owned a pair of CX-27's. LOVED everything but the slight roughness of those tweeters, and I bet that was the reason.

My only worry taking tweeters apart is getting the voice coil centered going back together, but these Audax tweeters are pretty easy, just make sure to mark them before disassembly so the magnets go back the same way..
Finding some ferrofluid will be the deal, luckily I had a friend with some extra from a project, I'm guessing the stuff ain't cheap..

Looks like 2 oz would be plenty for redoing a set of TF600's.

I have really nicer stuff, but I've always found these speakers to punch well above their weight, and if I'm gonna bother recapping, I'm gonna go whole-hog.

Funny thing about my cx-27s, one tweeter had gummed up fluid, but the other looked fine..
So make sure you need it before you buy..
I'm kinda like you these aren't my best, but they made a nice set for a secondary system in my man cave..
Good luck with it

Much appreciated, Govany! Yeah, I cannot seemingly give these away (local market sucks) and they SHOULD be enjoyed.

Too good to be ridin' pine, y'know?

Does 2-oz. take into consideration that a pair of TF600s has six (6) tweeters? :dunno:

Yeah, I was thinking about that. 2 on back, 1 in front per speaker.

I mean, it can't hold that much, can it??

I guess perhaps I should pull them and open beforehand.

I'm thinking 2 oz would be more than enough, but that may not be the correct fluid for speaker applications, hopefully you won't need any..
BTW hope you got spared from all the bad weather man..

Thank you. We got slapped around, and oy vey, the water. But, house is standing, and we're fine.

I have a blown one I can pull apart. Let me find it.

Considerate, and appreciated. My tweets work fine, all 6, but if I'm in for a penny, I'm in for a pound. I can pull the VC from it, pretty certain. Done that a couple times.

The ferrofluid is in the gap around the magnet pole piece, use something like the edge of a business card to get a sample, it should have the consistency & color of motor oil..
If you don't have continuity between the two terminals I wouldn't worry with it though, that one looks real clean
It's not working but it does show 8.something on my VOM. So where does the fluid go? Just in the gap? Weird.

Yes, just in the gap, That's where the voice coil is located when it's reassembled, it's the part that needs the ferrofluid for cooling, damping, the magnetism keeps the fluid in suspension so it doesn't leak out..

By the looks of those buggered up screw heads I'd say someone has messed with that tweeter before, maybe they cleaned the old ferro out, they will work without it, for awhile at least..

These are edge wound voice coils, meaning they are fragile, so be very careful going back together..

If you're in the neighborhood of 8 ohms you should be getting sound, maybe it's a crossover issue, they do have fuses..

First time the screws were removed. Still had some sticky lacquer over them. Not stripped that I can see but not worth another picture just to prove anything to you. When I got these (my second TF600s) they had a dead LF driver and in removing it I noticed the tweeter mounted in front of it had been replaced with some generic soft-dome tweeter. I asked the previous owner and they had paid someone to do that work. They had kept the original which was this one. But the other problem they didn't fix was that the bass driver was also bad so I obtained a replacement on Ebay. The tweeters I used I've posted many times here, but they came from Ali Express two for $13 including shipping. Pretty good match for me! New on left, original on right:
